Owners face fines as council in Australia introduces 24-hour 'cat curfew':

I feel this is a good thing.

I'd like to see how it pans out.

I'm going to be selfish and ignore all the arguments in the article.

When I lived with my parents there would often be a cat that peed under my window and it's such an awful smell to open your window to in the morning.

My dad is a bird lover, he hung food in the garden for birds and put up several birdhouses, but those pesky cats kept scaring them away :(

So I think you should be able to see where I stand on this subject.

The phrase "like herding cats" exists for a reason - they are inherently difficult to control.

This measure has clearly been designed by someone with no appreciation of cat behaviour, nor understanding of how impossible to apply it will prove to be.

I have a cat. She's an outside cat and she's so hard to catch... I can't catch the stupid thing. It just comes around for food. I don't know why I fed her everyday for 3 years. In 3 years I caught her and dragged her inside no more than 5 times. If I ever catch that stupid thing again i'm going to take her back to the tip where I found her.

Ps, I say that to myself every time, and then I catch her, and I'm like awww... off u go.

Here she is...

My cat, sadly she passed away 13 years ago, she lived around 15 years though, so not bad for a cat. Anyway she had the hugest area she dominated, it was her territory, it went from the beginning of the street #1 through to #11, I'm not sure if she dominated across the road as well or not. She use to sit on #7 porch where she had the view of that part of the street. She was the most friendliest cat, loved attention. If this curfew was in, it would have been impossible to keep her in my section, you would actually need to build some kind of bird cage around my home to keep her in which would have been a no go, so I would be broke with fines :(

I like the idea of a cat Curfew as it would save a lot of our native animals. Less stray cats around too I'm sure.

I honestly think its stupid to tell cats that they have to be home by a cartain time.

Cats do some of their best work at night time catching Mice which Australia is inundated with. So why make cats go home when they could be out hunting mice.

Got to say 1 of the stupidest ideas any Council has ever though of in this day and age.

Cats have been around millions of years. They will be around millions more.

Hmm, I can see both sides. I agree that they should only impose this on new kittens that are not accustomed to roaming if they have to impose this rule.

I agree that it seems crazy under the current conditions , but cats would likely have "off leash" areas and parks just like dogs. I know cat daycares and cafes are already a thing.

That being said, I am glad this is an Australian thing as they can work out the issues there. Cats don't give a fuck, lmao.
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

this is terrible

as someone thats owned many many cats in my life. some prefered to stay indoors, some were really inside for food. some were gone for days coming back now and again. (they were fine they are hunters and didnt go hungry)

to give cats a curfew is ridiculous

The curfew idea was probably thought up by people who don't know much about cats. They're usually independant ( there's always exceptions ) and you can't train them like a dog ( again there are exceptions ). However when I had cats if he/she was in the house when I went to bed I'd lock the cat flap overnight.

I don't like to see cats locked up, but they terrorise wildlife and do a lot of damage, so I suport the idea of keeping them inside.

We've a regular number of cats coming down by us one in particular who I've seen many times by the bird table. They've put a bell on the cat but when it's sat unmoving by the feeder it doesn't make a sound and more than capable of catching birds. I've also read that eventually they learn to move stealthily enough so as the bell doesn't move.

The cats are also out at night as well as during the day along with the others so in my mind why bother getting a pet cat if you're barely going to be seeing it. One neighbour used to come out around 10pm trying to call their two in.
