My apologies, Ibody, the only reason I didn't respond is because I haven't seen Claymore.

My standards for anime are about the same now as my standards for movies (maybe a bit higher, I don't watch that many movies anymore), but also far higher than my standards for regular TV shows. Honestly, I put up with a lot more terrible plots and/or bad writing in everyday TV show in America than I do with anime. That said, I'm in the same boat as earnshaw where I've seen far more different anime than I have different TV shows or movies and I know what a great anime is. However, I do think my standards for all forms of media have become more strict since I started watching anime.

I'll be honest here, but I really don't evaluate anime as specific as most other people do. I mainly rate anime (and other media) by the enjoyment factor. I don't really care too much about the specifics of characters, music, art, ect. If it has an interesting story and it makes me either laugh, cry, and/or excited, then I'll watch it.

I also got a question that I'd like to hear others' opinions on. What type of genres of anime do you mainly watch?

If you asked me when I first started watching anime, it would be Action and Sci-fi. All I would watch back then were those genres. I liked the thrill and excitement that those anime would provide. I didn't really get into Slice of Life and Romance, because I thought it would be boring.

However, once I was persuaded to watch Clannad, my taste of anime changed quite a bit. I discovered that romance and slice of life can provide a different feeling of enjoyment. Now, I really enjoy the 4 genres of Action, Romance, Sci-fi, and Slice of Life.

Well I've probably seen 20x more anime than I have movies or TV shows, but I'm just about as strict. Although, I'm probably a tad more critical of anime since I have more experience with it and know all the ins and outs.

I really watch all genres of anime, except yaoi (I don't swing that way). Of course when I first got into anime all I was interested in was action. I settled into other genres fairly fast, excluding slice of life and the "cute girls doing cute things" variety. I, as well, thought it would be boring at first but that changed after a while. The genres I tend to look for and enjoy are anything sci-fi, space, psychological, police/military, mecha. Sports anime usually get a high score from me too.

I recently got into sports anime a few months ago. There are some really good ones. My favorite sports anime is Major. Which is yours?

Sci-fi is probably my most watched genre, next to romance. Recently, I've been trying to find a lot more comedy to watch, as the life of a college student usually doesn't provide me with enough comic relief. If I had to narrow down my three main genres though, it'd be Sci-Fi, Romance, and Slice of Life.

I dont typically go out of my way to choose specific genre or themes in what I watch since quality of writing, unusual settings and an interesting story/characters (or, admittedly, just a cute girl for me to focus on) are more important that the specific nature of the content. This said however, there are certainly patterns in which genre and content types I end up favoring more. Of course, something falling to a favored genre is by no means a sure sell for me, since quality, entrainment and interest are still king and as a result I'll watch anything I get a kick out of or that makes me curious.

My favorites tend to be Sketch Comedies with SOL tendencies, Tragedies and Dramas (normally the ones that start fun and end with tears), along with anything that is cerebral or complex and promotes deeper consideration without being pretentious or seeming trying to be artificially 'deep' by withholding meaning (my view on this is that a series should prompt the viewer to think about their position on the issues presented, not what is being presented).

It's also not uncommon for me to watch reasonably well written action series, and I tend to go for Yuri/ shojo-ai if it's made available to me.
