Why is it that anime ratings are so unreliable? I never have this problem when buying books since if its average on Amazon is 4+ then chances are it'll be pretty good. The only exceptions are generally when the book gets preachy and I don't agree with the message - I'm looking at you
Parable of the Sower
,
Stranger in a Strange Land
, and
The Warrior Prophet
.
Right now I'm on a string of disappointments, the latest of which are Fate/Zero and the Index/Railgun/Railgun S franchise.
People told me that the books were better. I've finally finished reading them all and Kazuma Kamachi is a hack writer and this problem is compounded by the ****** translations and editing. Hamazura has even more plot armor than Touma, Tsuchimikado turned into a goddamn secret agent off screen and freely uses magic with no lasting effects, Accelerator keeps powering up, the magic system makes no sense, and the esper system makes no sense because level 5's should either be savants or geniuses based on their "calculation ability", whatever that means, but they don't have any other signs of outstanding intellect. Every minor character exists only as a plot device and when a bad guy is about to shoot one of the protagonists, a gun goes off - but the baddie is the one who got shot thanks to someone intervening at the last second.
I'm at my wits end and am about to go into mecha unless I start picking better shows. There's a few big names that I'm tossing around - Steins;Gate, Shinsekai Yori, Twelve Kingdoms (The first book was actually pretty good) but after that I'm completely out of ideas. Once I hit a dead end I'm not going to watch certain genres like moe/comedy/high school/romance even if they might be OK. It's just a matter of personal preference.
