I think the thing you were feeling was that it was rushed, at least that's what I got out of it. They put in all the explanations and plowed through anything that could've been emotional faster than you can say "Hayai!". Exaggerated, maybe, but you get the point.
Honestly, thus far, there hasn't been a lot that's caught my eye. Inu to Hasami is my favorite of the season (since Monogatari hasn't aired yet) with Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi following pretty closely with it's interesting setting. Everything else so far that I've watched (Kitakubu, Stella Jogakuin, Free!) hasn't been awful, but they're far from ground breaking. I still need to watch Servant X Service and Love Lab (which just came out) before I'm caught up with what's aired so far that isn't a second season, but I'm not expecting much (especially from the latter).
