The way I see it, the characters are just senseless. They here about all those numbers and still think they're going to kick ass? Pfft, there's not a drop of sense in that if you ask me. Also, there is a human instinct we all have, believe it or not, to
survive
. Also, these guys went to a training camp, right? What the hell did they do there during the, what, year or two they spent there? Play cards? Drink beer? Grow a garden of heavenly scented marigolds and daffodils? Well, they might as well have, because in the boot camps my friend tells me about they actually prepare you for situations. These guys are way too quick to curl up in a ball and suck on their thumbs in the face of danger to be called "trained soldiers".
I think you'll recall I already went over the "I've never been in the same situation" thing before, but I'll clarify on why that doesn't matter. I said I think I'd at least try to survive; don't you think most people would? The only one I think wouldn't are those who have nothing left to live for and would've killed themselves the next day even if they survived. I realize that may sound a bit harsh, but there's no other way to say it. And honestly, these soldiers give up before it's even certain they have no reason to live.
(Again, these are my opinions, I apologize in advance to those who take offense to them. Don't try to change them because I rarely do.)
