So, I'm doing my regular reading of a manga after finishing a couple anime and I stumble upon a new one, Hidan no Aria AA. As a fan of the original light novels, manga, and anime I'm thinking, "Hey, this should be interesting." Right I was, it was interesting... but not in a good way.
This is the summary: "A young girl, Mamiya Akari, idolizes the world-renowned S-ranked butei Kanzaki H. Aria and plans to follow in her footsteps. However, her test grades her out as only an E-rank! All is not lost, however, as Aria agrees to give her some pointers. Can Aria help this newcomer become a first-rate butei?"
First thing I notice is the artwork. Compared to the original it's severely lacking in many points (not saying I'm the best drawer in the world, but still even to me it was disappointing).
And then there were mis-categorizations of genre. This manga claimed to have the same genres as the original, however that proved false for Harem and Romance because of the lack of a MALE character (I know what you're thinking and no, yuri is not one of the genres...). Edit: Nvm, harem isn't one of the genres, but Shoujo Ai is, so that justifies the romance genre... Never really thought Aria to be one to get into a girl-girl relationship...
Also, they fail to capture the personality of Aria from the original Hidan no Aria. At this point, this means there isn't any truly "sassy" character (sure there's the ***** character as well as the annoying character).
And finally there's the plot. Four chapters in, the general plot is introduced. It's basically the same as the original, but much less believable. Akira, much like Kinji from the original, meets Aria. From there, Aria allows Akira to try and prove that she's good enough to pair up with her. However, unlike Kinji, Akira has an unbelievable stroke of luck and completes the challenge Aria tests her with.
So yeah, this manga is pretty much a 'Wtf' spin-off of the original work... -_-
