Oh wow didn't see the dub vs sub thing here, I wanna join in:
To be brutally honest, most American voice actors don't care about Japanese culture so if they work on anime dubbing, they don't have any feel for how they should be "acting".
Also, most of these voice actors don't feel the need to try since there isn't a huge supply of voice actors out there and they know they can keep their job in any case.
Most publishing companies don't care about what they produce either. they just think about quantity rather than quality.
Ultimately Main Three Problems:
-Bad Voice-acting
-Americanization
-Bad Translation
They've gotten better with Translating, and a tad bit better in Americanization, but the Voice-Acting seems to not have improved.
I do have to say there are a few gems that have good Dub (ex. Soul Eater, Code Geass), and that's what I hope would happen to all series, but it isn't the case sadly.
