Still, its kinda a shame that they decided to go down the fan service route for these. I didnt expect them to do anything new, but i certainly would have liked them to animate some of the other, non-anime arcs, because they still have a lot to say in regard to the Higurashi storyline that the core arcs dont explore.

I recently got the manga only Onisarashi-hen/Demon Exposing chapter, which shows what effects Rika's death has on those Hinamizawa residents that no longer live in the village (and so escaped the gassing) and how that affects the rest of Japan at large. It also adds a great deal of explanation to to the ending events of Tsumihoroboshi-hen (Atonement arc).

That one would have been a prime candidate for animation since its short and could probably be covered in the span of a single OVA (since they aren't constrained in time like TV episodes are).
EDIT: Spike Spencer, the poor unfortunate soul who always gets cast as a whiny teenager, to many Japanese ones to name and subs.

. But yeah, i expect these will all be like Rei 1 and 4, best not to get your hopes up for anything significant.

Or you could watch Dantalian no Shoka each week. I saw episode 1 and it seems like the thing you're looking for, but I personally have chosen not to continue watching it. I have enough trouble keeping up with the other series that air each week. I think i'm watching about 5 or 6 atm

Terrible thought associating pokemon with anime, even though it is.

First couple of seasons were decent though.
