Well I've never been to Japan, but I heard that even in Japan people who watch anime are looked down upon. Being an otaku really is something bad there.
On the contrary manga is much more accepted and in my country as well.
Here's another awkward story:
There is this course I took last semester where some of the lectures are given by an older student / sempai and once when he was preparing his powerpoints he accidentally showed the contents of his download folder which contained things like the lastest episode of "Onii-chan no Koto nan*a Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!".
Well it was a good thing only the anime fans like me knew that was an brother-sister love anime, otherwise I don't think he would be respected anymore. :P

Thats the weird thing. In Japan, buying and reading manga is a totally acceptable thing for a person to do, but when you watch the animated versions your a social outcast, go figure.
As for Higurashi Kira, i mentioned it months ago, pay attention :P

Well, actually, the reason being an otaku is considered bad in Japan is because the term actually carries much stronger negative conotations. In Japan, an otaku actually is a term used to describe someone who is a nerd with no life, really, from what I know.

Ok, time for a breakdown. You'll find me quite civil. First I want to ask, which anime is your standard model for anime (which title).

1. its poorly drawn
Compared to what? Animated movies offer a poor comparison because of the difference in budget between movie and TV. Plus, I question how they can be 'poorly drawn' when the detail level is much higher than US animation (Movie production excempt, of course).
2. Its illogical
Don't confuse fantastical or unrealistic with illogical. lack of logic implies unrealistic continuity of plot, and thats not really present in any works save for those that aren't meant to have plots in the first place.
3. Hendri (i thinks thats how u spell it?)
You mean Hentai right? Its really not a good idea to fold that sort of thing in with regular anime, since you can get that in non animated varieties as well with the exact same content.
4. People dont naturally have blue hair
And dogs cant usually talk, babies cant usually manufacture lasers or plot world domination, and people usually cant fart fire. I rest my case, your honour.
5. Better things to watch
Example? Sides, its not like anime is the ONLY thing we watch, we do watch regular TV as well.
6. American cartoons are better
Might I direct, then, to 'Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt'. Its an anime, but its petty much the exact same as any american cartoon ive ever seen, right down to the animation style, loose plot and toilet humour.

7. People can't make rose whips
See point 4.
8. Did i mention hendri?
see point 3.
