I have absolutely no idea what those ants were doing inside my DVD player, or how they got there for that matter. Ive never even had the player outside, its been in my lounge room since I bought it 3 years ago. That explains why there ants all over place place if I leave an empty coke bottle out overnight though. I have a feeling they are also living inside my stereo.
Ah well, for now im getting by using the other DVD player I had in my bedroom. Ide totally forgotten that most DVD players have region unlocking codes, wish ide known that 3 years ago instead of forking out that much for another DVD player :P . Now i can just leave that one in region one and use my PS3 for my region 4's.
Even if it hadn't worked, ide still have some anime to watch. Seems that Funi and Madman have struck some sort of deal, because ive noticed that recent titles licensed by both are regions 1 and 4 (or A and B for BD's).
Exactly what the point of releasing a set that contains both DVD and BD versions of the same show is im not entirely sure, but it worked out well for me this time.
And thats actually kinda funny, I got the first Yotsuba manga as part of my shipment, haven't read it yet though.
As for constant sketch reproduction, i cant imagine it would be to difficult in this day and age, since you could most likley reproduce the image digitally, and then blank and redraw the parts that need to change. Back in 'the day' would have been a nightmare though, trying to reproduce the same drawing accurately. I imagine thats why animation has become so much more detailed over the past 2 decades.

Yeah, you would think that, but they still draw everything by hand, they only use the computer to color the scans of the finished sketches. Even the backgrounds are still painted by hand! (I've seen some nice BG paintings from recent shows.)
To make accurate copies of certain unmoving parts they use very thin paper that shines through when you put it on a light table. Then they just lay one page over the drawing and redraw the lines.
Sure, there are a few animators who started drawing with a stylus on a touch screen (Yoshi*oshi Abe for example), but to my knowledge all animation studios still draw everything by hand on paper. And that means thousands of sketches for every episode.
Currently Madoka Magica sketches are very much wanted by collectors. Sets of a few dozen sketches are sold for thousands of dollars.
On April 4th someone won 100 copy sketches of Madoka Magica in the online auction for $4000! So he didn't even get the originals. O_o
If I look at today's ended auctions...
One hand-painted cel of My Neighbor Totoro sold for $5045. :O Of course everything studio Ghibli makes is worth a fortune.
Sketches of Porco Rosso drawn by Miyazaki himself were sold today for $3026.

Wow, thats actually rather surprising. Which reminds me, theres a series of extra's on the ADV release of Kanon that demonstrate how it was made which I still haven't gotten around to watching yet since i dont have the last one (I just ordered it now, thanks for the reminder :P ).
Dang, those are some seriously pricey drawings. Were do you buy these things from BTW, ide like to have a look. I know I asked the same thing in the past, but it'd be to hard to find. I tried checking your past posts on the thread in your profile, but i cant seem to locate it.

I see, I've seen the behind the scenes extras from the anime Air before which were very interesting, but I didn't know they also made them for Kanon.
Well there are a few websites. There is one official store where I buy all my production art from, Mandarake Auction. They have an English website and they can ship your items outside of Japan. If you want sketches from recent series that's the website you're looking for.
Yahoo Japan also has a big auction website where you can buy from other users, but if you're living outside Japan you need a deputy service to send it to you.

That'd be right. Thats always been my one major complaint when it comes to the DVD's that US licensors put out, they always seem to prioritise making the product cheaper as opposed to adding in all those extra bits. Personally, I would gladly pay the cost of an extra disk in order to have those.
Back at home, Madman have always been pretty generous with their extra content. The thing with Madman though is that the asking price for a series is usually 2 - 3 times what i could buy for elsewhere, so the only time I buy locally is in the case of special edition products that the US didnt get.
PS-I found some Madoka Magica sketches on Mandarake, currently at around $60, lets see how much these go for :P .
PPS- That reminds me, I dont have the 1st DVD of the ADV release of Air either. Thats *70 ive spent tonight because of you lol.

I'm also a fan of extras, unfortunately the Belgian and UK licensors I buy from don't seem to prioritise it either.
About that Madoka Magica set, if you'll check back in 5 days it will be much higher. :P Most people don't start bidding until the last hour.
Most that I paid for a set was ¥11,100 (top result in closed auctions for Spice and Wolf) which is the set I talked about on the previous page.
PPS. You're welcome. ;)

Ah yeah, ive got it up now. Thats not a bad price for something like this when you break it down, only about 65 yen a sheet.
I can defiantly imagine the Madoka Magica ones going up close to the end though, if my experience with online auctioning is anything to go by thats pretty much how it is for all auctions, since making less bids generally means getting a better price.
Ive always found that its not worth bidding until maybe 7 seconds before an auction ends, since thats the best way to make sure nobody can bid over you.
That or you could you do what my mother did once, she accidentally bid $40,000 on a car when she meant to bid $4000. Luckilly it only registered 40,000 as the maximum automatic bid).
