Personally, i thought Gunslinger Girl lacked substance. While it was interesting to watch the politics and what not, i would have preferred a little more elaboration on character, a little more human introspection from the girls.
For me it felt like the where just 'there', and i wasn't really connecting to any character, which kinda killed the mood.

As for not having a whole lot of selection in the UK, i was kinda in the same boat when i started collecting. Best thing you can do is go to an electronics store and ask them to sell you a DVD player which supports region 1. Some of them are kitted out to do this already, but most DVD players have a 'secret menu' which the manufacturers put in there as a boycott of the reigon control system, which allows you to change their region coding.
Generally, they cant tell you how to get into this menu in the store, but its common knowledge on the internet.I dont know what brands you have in the UK, but my Pioneer DVD player (did you know pioneer also licensed anime at one point) could play DVD Regions 0,1,2 and 4 straight out of the box.
Once you got one of those, its a simple matter of finding a US online store that you like. I prefer rightstuf (yes, its only one F) myself, the prices are great, all the items are legit (they actually even license some anime themselves under the title of 'Nozomi) and they have very cheap international shipping rates (you pay $10 USD postage for the first item which buys you the box, then $2 every item after that).
