Forgot KanColle was a browser game. It feels like mobile trash, so I must have just assumed it was in my head.

Also, what's with the constant Isekai stuff now? Is it the new "school setting"? Super popular at the moment?

Mostly just a genre shift. At one point pretty much everything was rom-coms, another time time it was all cgdct or some subversion of it. At another point everything was all high-school batlle-action fantasy.

Isekais always been around, case in point MAR early 2000's, or .hack, but I think the wave only really took off around the time SAO and Konosuba hit. For some reason, something about it really hooked people.

Will be interesting to see what the next big focus will be. I personally hope high-school battle-action fantasy makes a comeback soon, as that's one of my favorite genres. Closest thing we've really had as of late was Kenja no Majo, where the guy managed to get isekaid into a battle-action fantasy highschool setting somehow. Was definitely an interesting twist for sure.

So I was watching a Mai-Otome AMV today, and a question popped into my head. Why is it these days that studios tend to use CGI simply as a shortcut, and not in an artistic enhancement manner?

To give an example of an artistic use, look at Nanoha. Pretty much everything in there was handdrawn, except for the magic circles which they used CGI for. This really helped to emphasise the otherworldy aspect of them.

In Mai-Otome they did this with things like the earpieces during the transformations. It wasn't nesscecary, but once again, it emphasised the otherworldy aspect that was meant to be present.

Nowadays it just seems so garish and out of place when you see it most of the time. One of the only really good uses of it I can think of in recent times is Pokemon X&Y, and that was quite a few years ago already. Well that and Kimetsu no Yaiba, but thats Ufotable, and majority of what they do is CGI, so they really know how to use it properly, so they're more the exception than the norm.

The anime was solid, had a good ending. Rebellion, the movie, it was odd to say the least. It fell into the trap of director wanted one thing, writer wanted another from my understanding.

I actually think I liked TK's take on the TV series part of it, "The magical girl next door", better, as it gave a more in-depth look into the Homura side of things. Reading it it never once felt like "there is no way this couldn't have happened at some point in her journey".

Yeah, it wasn't canon, as it was only a fan book, but it was still really well done. Definitely worth reading if you're a fan of the Madoka Magika series.

Yeah. Should definitely check it out.

Also, if you're a fan of Girlz Und Panzer, I highly recommend also checking out TK's Girlz Und Panzer "Yukiyukite Senshadou" trilogy. Has to be one of the greatest takes on that series I have ever come across.

I think that series is what really sold me on TK's works.
