First law of the internet: For every person who professes to like something, there will be an equal amount of people who profess to dislike it.

No, SAO is not the worst thing out there and to be fair to it I find the Aincrad part quite good, but objectively speaking it's very much a 5/10 effort in most every department, there's nothing that stands out as being an excersise of artistic brilliance, and like many anime with mass demographic appeal it relies on the prevelance of popular themes as a crutch to be more relevant to the modern consumer. I would cite a similar example in Highschool of the Dead, which to any objective analysis is pretty bad, but subjectively gets a good response to the prevailing theme of guns, tits and zombies.

There in lies the source of peoples disdain for the series. The more shallow of viewers sing the shows praise and make proclamations about how it's 'the best anime ever', lifting it up well above where it deserves to be, and the other camp who can see that Kirito is a gary stu, that the kirito x asuna relationship basically comes out of nowhere (I've seen SAO praised as a stunning romance genre piece), the fact that the aincrad arc resolves through dues ex machina and that subsequent to that the interesting subtext of the series is lost, all feel the need to tear it back down again.

Most series that are bad, people know they are bad. SAO isn't bad though, it's just on the upper side of meh and gets more praise than it really deserves. All this said, I've never heard of anyone hating on the studio.

Eh, I've always seen Aincrad as the worst arc, with Phantom Bullet and Alicitization being the best, and Fairy Dance trailing closely behind. The real high of SAO has always been when it showed just how much Aincrad affected Kiroto. You can't go into a death game like that and expect to come out unscarred, and Phantom Bullet and Alicitization showcase this exceedingly well. Thats why I want to see Alicitization adapted so much. It is the point in which everything else in the series finally comes together, and we truly get to see how Aincrad affected Kirito. Not to mention the fact that Asuna actually takes a frontline role again like she did in Aincrad. Everything else in SAO is pretty meh though.

As for people hating on A-1 Pictures, it's something I see on numerous forums and videos around the web.

Only watched the first fourteen episodes or so and I had seen enough. Whatever the arc about Shino Asada was called could have been good. Though it would have been better if Kirito wasn't apart of it at all. He felt shoehorned in.

I spose it depends a lot of what you get out of it. I personally couldn't give two tosses about the characters and their individual stories, I've always been more interested in the setting. Being fundimentally cynical and yet eternally curious about the human condition, I find the idea of a society formed by concensus in the absense of the rule of law and standard human values to be quite fascinating.

Everything after that has considerably lowered stakes, so it's not as interesting to me. Hence why I tend to prefer the 'progressive' series to the original.
