The only Key anime I had ever seen was Clannad. I never saw the VN or played the game (though I would like to, and would take the Kotomi route if I did), so I can't judge the anime as an adaption, but I've been impressed by what I've seen.

Though I will say I was a bit disappointed with the OVA involving Tomoyo, it seemed a bit lacklustre in my opinion.

Rewrite - based on another Key VN. The anime adaptation is total shit
too true had to drop
only one i tried out of all those
Been hearing that all around. Wasn't even going to consider it until I made my way through the VN.

Been staying away from Planetarian as well. VN is currently on my backlog, and I want to get through it before I watch the adaptation.

I haven't seen many anime adaptations of Key VNs either but I agree Clannad was pretty good. I haven't played the VN though so I don't know how it fares as an adaptation but I would guess they've done a decent job.

The VN is similar in length to Rewrite and the anime is made by KyoAni. Combining Clannad and Clannad afterstory there are 47 episodes, so four times as many episodes as the Rewrite adaptation for similar length stories... It's no wonder the Rewrite anime is so rushed. Also, 8-bit is the studio responsible for the Rewrite anime and they do not have a good track record with VN adaptations (think Grisaia series) so I guess I shouldn't have been expecting much in the first place.

I'm not going to even touch on the anime original route they're doing which is like a comedic spin-off of the series. At the very least it's kinda entertaining to see new interactions between the characters as a VN reader, but for newcomers they won't get the essence of what Rewrite is really like.

I think David Production did a solid job of adapting Planetarian. It's a short visual novel, so a short anime is pretty appropriate and it doesn't feel rushed at all. Fair enough if you want to play the VN first.

I thought Tomoyo After was ok, not as good as Clannad Afterstory. I think the VN is at least 10 hours, so maybe a single 25 min OVA wasn't enough to cover it.

I don't think I've seen any other Key anime adaptations. I liked Angel Beats but it wasn't an adaptation.

The Kyou Arc was always bound to be messed up, I would never have chosen either of the twins due to how much suffering the other would be going through. Personally, I would have had mini-series instead of OVA's since to be truly romantic and artistic things should never be rushed. Hence why I never bothered to look at the Clannad movie.

Here is my idea for a Tomoya x Kotomi side. (Here comes the Spoiler Express, choo choo!)

Tomoya comes up to Kotomi and quotes to her, "The day before yesterday I saw a rabbit. Yesterday it was a deer. And today it's you." From that point on they go out, and during a date Kotomi explains in a little more detail the mechanics of the Illusionary World and the light orbs. We already know that they only appear when true happiness is achieved, they only grant a wish in its exact detail and when it's from the heart, and that children are effectively a collection of the happiness and wishes of their parents.

This means that children are catalysts of power for light orbs - look back at the events of the main (Nagisa) story and how many people they made happy; this provides a huge amount of power to make Tomoya's wish come true - and that the power of a light orb is measured by the happiness generated by its receiver. It also means that there is some form of equation for the power of the light orbs, and how to bring them out. I would like to think that Kotomi explains all of this to Tomoya while breaking it down as simply as she could, and so they begin to explore other areas, causing her to open up even more.

The rest, I would leave to Key. It's clear to me that they have potential as animators and storytellers, and although I only ever saw the anime, I don't doubt that Clannad is truly a fantastic experience.

Resident Key guy has arrived.

Personally, I think the Rewrite VN is bloated as f**k anyways, especially Terra. You could tell at least the core aspect of it within 12 episodes, maybe, but 8-bit is picking probably some of the worst parts the addapt and washing so much of the tension and narrative flow out of it, even I cant stomach it.

Really, it was the Key x KyoAni combo that made it work. P.A Works and whoever did Planetarian made a good crack at it. 8 bit and JC staff have been terrible though. Least Rewrite has it's own problems so I cant put ALL the blame on the studio, Little Busters though...

Terra was pretty slow indeed, particularly the middle part. The last part was pretty rushed though (e.g.
Earth Dragon fight was essentially skipped and Kashima Sakura was already dead LOL
) so that could balance it out a bit. Moon was well paced I thought. Some of the heroine routes were a bit bloated in places such as the first half of Shizuru's route. At the very least to adapt Common Route>??? Route>Moon>Terra it would need at least 24 episodes I think. In which case, yeah 13 episodes for common route+anime original route for the anime isn't too bad, 8-bit has just done a bad job with it by cramming in multiple parts of heroine routes and loading it with fanservice and comedy when it should have taken a serious turn.

Indeed Key and KyoAni were a good combo, but it's a shame they didn't stick with them. (Although Rewrite is pretty different from Key's other works so it's hard to say for certain that KyoAni would adapt it amazingly. At the very least better than 8-bit LOL)

I find paying attention to which studios produce what shows pretty helpful when trying to figure out which shows to watch the next season.

And in the end, the whole point of that overly bloated narrative was
screw enviromentalism
lol.

Given their track record I would say they would have done a fairly good job of it though, it's not like they haven't done anything with that sort of content before, and most of Rewrite is still Key 101. Not to mention the pure visual superiority, glassy eyes aside, their Key addaptations still look gorgeous more than 10 years down the track, and I cannot say the same thing for more recent addaptations.

I can't really remember what happened in Rewrite all that well though, been to long. When they eventually put the English version of Rewrite+ out I'll go through it again. Kind of annoys me that they blocked the translation of Harvest Festa, that's been sitting on my shelf begging for a patch for years.
