On another note: Finished watching the Madoka series. Surprised by how dark and thought-provoking it was. Definitely more so than your average magical girl anime. The art direction was strange, especially for the witches.

After giving Sword Art Online a chance after disregarding all the negativity surrounding the series it turned out better than expected but still wasn't that good.
The first few episodes started off well and then the series then just completely faded away and by episode 14 or 15, it was becoming just plain bad. It would have worked better as a shorter anime series I think.
Having read up a bit on season 2, I don't think I'll be watching the next season.

I don't really think the genders would have made a large difference to the story really. They could have all been male or mixed and I don't expect the story would have played out any differently. The relationships would have had to be remapped a little, but I think only Madoka NEEDED to be female.
Though, that said, maybe I can put that down to a difference of viewer perspective. Some people need a proxy in a given series to project onto, where others watch the series 'though the eyes of God' and don't need a character proxy.
But the third movie, I'm a little on the fence about whether I like it or not. The characterization at the end (vagueness for spoiler reasons) felt a little unrealistic to me. A little to overkill in comparison to their established relationship, and the methodogy behind exactly how that was achieved was never really explained either.
I know I'm dragging this from a page back, but I'd be extremely remiss if I didn't add my two cents to this conversation.
Personally, I think even Madoka could've been male, it just would've been more of a Shinji character type to be pulled off efficiently without changing the story much. That said, people would still have a problem with it and start saying "Shinji, make a contract with the magical space ferret!" or "Shinji, get in magical girl outfit!"
I actually really liked the 3rd movie (which I now have on blu-ray) and its ending. A lot of people complain that the massive character change at the end (vagueness again for spoiler reasons) was out of place. For me, as someone who has watched first hand as someone slowly did 180 degree personality change, I found it very believable for someone that underwent so much trama and stress for god knows how long to have change so dramatically in character.
However, the reason I loved the movie so much was for a reason I can't explain without spoiling a major event of the movie.

I'd have to agree with the shorter series idea. I feel like it would've earned a better rating from me if it had ended at the end of the first major arc. Elf Art Online (or whatever the hell you wanna call it) just completely destroyed an already weak show. I shudder to think how the second season will go.
Yeah, it just kept dragging on and on and really wasn't interesting whatsoever. If it ended after episode fourteen/fifteen, then it would have been better praised by me too.
The second season has like four or five episode already. It's description just sounds so bad.
