We have them on our local pond. So maybe just maybe this year I'll get a picture of them.
I was hoping around this time I would have some flower shots of my garden. But sadly very few bulbs have flowered. Still not sure why. I suspect it's too wet for them.
One of those birds when you're out by water that you always hope to see even if it is just a blue flash
Thanks! There used to be quite a lot of them where I lived, and the place where I photographed them was rather popular (photographers came from different countries just to get a shot). Sadly they all seemed to have died previous winter, haven't seen or even heard one since
But yeah, the blue flash is amazing, as that's all you really get to see when they fly around.

You have to be able to hide though (in a cabin or one of those pop up wildlife tents). Kingfishers don't seem to mind sound and talking all that much, but if they see movement they're gone
You could also place some sticks in the water so they can sit and hunt from there, plus you can position the sticks so you can get a clear shot.
I forgot to say the orangy/pinky bit on the lower part of the beak is what you can use to identify it is a female as males are all black. not sure if that applies to juveniles off my head though

In those halcyon days of steam powered photography there use to be a cheap method of Macro photography.
You just reversed your lens by the use of an adapter ring. Fun days.
