Visual Novels. Story driven games in which masterful tales are woven using a combination of sound effects, music, character sprites, backgrounds, and CG's.

Length can anything from a 2-3 minute short story with a single ending, to a 100+ hour long game, with countless routes and endings. There are numerous sub-genres under the umbrella of Visual Novels, each with their own unique charm.

A few free VN's which are fairly easy to get into if you are new to the genre, or are worth looking into if you have yet to.

Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius


A space opera-esque story with tactical rpg elements. The battle segments have 5 difficulty settings, ranging from sneeze at the enemy and their dead, to make one wrong move and your completely destroyed.

It is an OELVN, or Original English Language Visual Novel

Narcissu


A sad tale, this one is a kinetic novel, meaning it is strictly linear, with no choices. It is well written, and is a good showcase of just what kind of emotions a Visual Novel can aim to pull out in a reader.

Recently I've been trying to play through the Da Capo games, they're pretty entertaining (but in a low quality sort of way). Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.

Heh, no worries. Biggest fear with aiming to make new discussion threads of this scale is that there won't be anyone ele willing to join in. So getting that first post is always a welcome sight.

At any rate, I've come to realize that the words "Backlog is Sin" couldn't be truer, as my VN backlog never seems to shrink, only grow.

I've still only got one route for Mahou Shoujo Ai complete, and I still have Mahou Shoujo Ai 2 and Ai san to go through as well, then there's Bloody Rondo, Shinigami no Testament, 11Eyes, Kara no Shoujo, Kotowari. About 70% completion on Yandere I believe, I need to finish that up. School Days has been stuck at 55% completion for what, 3 years now? Don't know when, if ever, I'll finish it. The combination of the game engine being glitchy as hell, and the format in which is is structured, makes it real pain to work through.

And that's just some of the JLVN's. It doesn't even touch on the backlog of OELVN's I've got. Leader of The Enemy ||

Couldn't agree more about the dreaded backlog. Kara no Shoujo and School Days are high on my list, albeit for different reasons. I'll also take a look at some of the other titles you listed when I have a chance.

Have you been following/contributing to any of the recent Kickstarter projects? I think I've sent a few dollars to Clannad, Narcissu, Muv-Luv, Grisaia... and Stay! Stay! DPRK, of course. Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.

Haven't been following kickstarters recentlly, no, though Grisaia Clannad and Narcissu aren't exactly recent ones either, all being at least a year old if I remeber correctly.

Lack of spare cash means I can't really put anything forward. As it is, once I have money aviable, I'd rather put it towards backing Love in Space's patreon than funding one of Sekai Projects Kickstarters. Sekai Project has a habit of using a Kickstarter to make money on the side, instead of using it to fund the localization. They basically throw the Kickstarter right before they release the VN anymore. Doesn't leave me with a good taste in my mouth. Leader of The Enemy ||

That and the fact that when they localized Fruit of Grisaia, they butchered it by cutting out all of the H-scenes, which a pivitol part that contributed massively to the character and story develpmoent in Amane's route. Leader of The Enemy ||

If I recall, there were also rumors surrounding the supposed appropriation of the already-completed fan translation that went up on TLWiki a while before Sekai announced their localization. I actually played Fruit with that fan-made patch and it was shockingly good, one of the first VN translations that really blew me away in terms of sheer quality.

So yeah, Sekai Project isn't getting any localizer of the year awards. I still like supporting VN translation, though... that, and I'm eagerly awaiting the eventual Kiminozo translation, which I'm pretty sure is under their purview. Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.
