Oh, VN localization companies paying fan translators for use of their translations when localizing works is nothing new, Mangagamer has done so quite often, and if you read the credits iin each episode of School Days HQ (Its set up in a six episode format on playthrough), you see that there is partial creadit for translation to Sekai Project from back when they were still a fan stranslation group, as Jast USA paid them to use their translations.
They can save costs on labor this way after all. Fan translations are a bundle buy rather than man hour rates. They still have to edit it and all, but it's less costly in the end.

Ah, then what I heard was probably just a rumor then. Or perhaps I'm misremembering; this would've been almost 3 years ago, I think.

I never did VNs myself, though I am interested. Is it possible to do a speedrun on them?
All depends on the VN's to be honest.
Kinetic Novels like Narcissu, Ame no Marginal, Planetarian, or Higurashi, being linear storys with no choices, are strictly dependant on how quickly you can read through them.
School Days however is one of those ones where unless you are using a guide, you can expect to be spemding 100+ hours trying to get full completion on it, due to it's structure and the engine they use.
As a general rule, the shorter ones like Yandere (VNDB LINK https://vndb.org/v1303), you can expect to be able complete in 1-5 hours if you are serious about it, assuming it has a tranlation patch, you can fluently read Japanese, or it is an OELVN.
If you're having to use something like Visual Novel Reader as an intermediary to help with on the fly translations, you can expect it to take longer.

Most VNs have a "skip" feature that speeds through the text at a very fast clip. So yeah, you can speedrun 'em. You'll barely be able to read anything, though.

Speedrunning a visual novel seems to be something I don't think would be interesting. Unless it was a hybrid visual novel with gameplay such as Utawarerumono.
Anyway, this thread reminded me of VNDB and that I should update my profile on there. Since it's the best place for me to keep track of the many VNs I've played.

Unless there are better sites?

Yeah, that's the joke. Would be a variation of speed reading.
