Welp, I just bought the Sakura game series on Humblebundle. Been wanting to get Sakura Dungeon and Fantasy for a while now, Fantasy especially so, and figured 10 dollars to get the entire collection was worth it.
why though? the Sakura games are mindless trash
Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.

90% of them are just shovelware fanservice, yeah. But the story of Fantasy caught my eye back when it was being promoted pre-release, and Dungeon has interesting gameplay, and I'm curious about just how far they can go in the Ren'Py engine. I saw what Vaendryl pulled off in the Sunrider battle engine, which was quite an interesting system itself, but a Dungeon Crawler is something different. Seeing as I'd be be paying $20 to get Dungeon, and $10 to get Fantasy, if I were to buy them normally, I figured $10 for the entire collection wasn't that bad.

The art though, meh. Not that great. Good if you like big-bust fanservicy stuff, but beyond that, not much to it.

Mahou Shoujo Ai might get higher rated if I had a better grasp of the language, but I'm too poor to learn it.

Sakura Dungeon is the only Sakura game I really liked. However I haven't played the majority of them, I don't think. There seem to be a fair amount of them.

I am pretty biased when it comes to first person dungeon crawlers though. It's one of my favourite game genres.

I'm trying to figure out the difference between a Visual Novel and a traditional Adventure Game...

Is a VN basically a digital "chose your own adventure" novel? Or are there objectives in the games, such as collecting various items and trying to solve puzzles?

Are all Visual Novels done in anime style? Or is that just a popular theme among VN's?

I don't think there really is a difference. Visual novels are adventure games. I think visual novel was just a term used to denote that it was released/published/created in Japan but is now used broadly as an interchangeable term.

I could be wrong but that's what I always assumed.

How much focus is put into the story.

In a Visual Novel, the story is it's reason for existing, with what gameplay elements that exist, existing to help drive it forward. As a general rule, they tend to be minimalistic on gameplay, but some can really push the boundries at times.

Sengoku Rance (
https://vndb.org/v487
) and the Sunrider series (
MoA
https://vndb.org/v14112
and
LD
https://vndb.org/v17694
) for example, all employ a turn-based combat system at points in the game. The Sunrider series is a grid based tactical combat system, while Rance is more akin to a RPG combat system like the one in Pokemon.

Even still, these elements exist to support the story, rather than the story being built around them.

There are many different sub-genres of VN's, management sims, Dating sims, Sound Novels, Kinetic Novels, the list goes on, but the basic definition is "Text-heavy, story-based games, with generally minimalistic gameplay."

For art, that's a popular theme, but by no means the only style. There are some developers who striclty use 3D models, there are some who have used strictly western style of art, there's people who have done everything in pixel art. The Japanese Anime style of art is more commonly used due to the fact it's easier and safer to reach out to the market you know exists, than take a blind leap and hope you catch someone in a market that may or may not exist, but it is by no means the only style of art used.

Jack already answered this, but I'll give my thoughts as well: if it has a background image, character sprites, and a text box, then on some level it can be classified as a VN.

The "choose your own adventure" aspect is very common, but not a requirement; there are "kinetic" novels that have no choices and no deviations in the story, with the only gameplay involving clicking the mouse/hitting a key to advance the text.

Occasionally a VN will have much more engaging gameplay like dungeon crawling/turn-based combat/etc. -- the degree to which this "actual" gameplay overshadows the text-based storytelling would be the degree to which it's not a visual novel. Phoenix Wright and Fire Emblem are examples of games that have VN elements but sometimes aren't classified as such due to their gameplay. It's a pretty blurry line though.

VNs are anime-styled because Japan has a monopoly on the genre.

Thanks guys! That's helped clear up some of my questions. I appreciate it.

I love adventure games. I've been playing them since I was a kid. I think my first graphic adventure game would have been King's Quest, back in the early 80's. I don't think it would fall into the Visual Novel category due to the nature of the game (you control your character as you walk around various screens, typing in commands to interact with the environment/items).

But, would something like the Dark Fall series fall into the Visual Novel category?
https://youtu.be/s5Zqce2gfYU

It's presented in 2.5D (It's beyond 2D, but it's not quite 3D, so it's referred to as 2.5D), and it's a psychological thriller adventure. It follows a storyline which you progress through, and while there is a lot of reading in the game, any spoken text in the game is done via voice overs (with captions you can enable). Does this count as a Visual Novel? Or does the gameplay go too far, and pushes it out of the VN category?

Are there any VN that are psychological thrillers?
