Preclude

Later in 2023, Necromancy will be hitting our screens as the 29th skill in RS3. The first teaser trailer has shown us a few things that we can expect:

> Necromancy is a combat skill that adds to your combat level;

> There will be a whole new city / area to explore and repopulate;

> The majority of the XP will come from actively engaging in combat;

> Non-combat activities are required to produce items needed for Necromancy combat;

> There is currently no scope to include skilling in the wider Necromancy skill;

> There will be a talent tree system where players can unlock new perks as they progress the skill.

The following suggestion is based on the little knowledge we have now, alongside some speculation on my part.

What is Skillomancy?

Skillomancy is the support/gatherer skill for Necromancy. It will be the Mining to Smithing, Woodcutting to Fletching, Divination to Invention.

It is also dependent on Necromancy. It will be the Smithing to Mining, Fletching to Woodcutting. Invention to Divination.

It will basically be the gatherer skill that helps collect resources required for Necromancy, whilst also supporting other aspects of the game outside of combat. It will also depend on Necromancy, as different tiers of tools and enhancers will only be obtained from NPCs defeated by Necromancy.

This relationship between the two skills gives us an opportunity to experience a unique economy. Each is a standalone skill, but when used together, they can thrive.

What value will Skillomancy add?

Skillomancy will open up some Necromancy elements to non-combat skillers, such as the city and some storylines, whilst allowing for those interested in Necromancy to further their combat abilities.

It all starts in the City of Um. A city of those waiting to move on to the eternal plane. A city that needs to work like any other to thrive. This means there will be all manner of NPCs, from merchants to builders, noblemen to farmers, adventurers to cold-blooded killers. (It could possibly hold other races, such as Dwarves, Elves, and Goblins, but I’m not fully aware of the lore surrounding this). Obviously only so many of these will be handy in combat, thus these will be the ones summoned in Necromancy.

But what about those other NPCs? How will Farmer Martin’s Grandfather help you in your fight vs. the King Black Dragon? How will Miner Undead Dwarf be able to help when surrounded by several Dagannoth?

Skillomancy will give those NPCs a use, and their newly found expertise from the afterlife may be able to help you with your respective skills in the pre-afterlife.

Skillomancy Tree

Tying into the structure of the Necromancy skill, Skillomancy will also have talent tree. This tree will have three branches: Gatherer, Artisan, and Support. Each will offer bonuses to their respective skills.

Skillomancy – The Gatherer Skill

We already know there will be gathering in Necromancy during the ritual process. This is unlikely to change. The process looks to make use of bones and other items in order to create the items you need to perform Necromancy.

Skillomancy will help expand this ritual process. It will involve a process of collecting miasma that can be used in the ritual process, either decreasing the time taken to produce the final product, increasing the yield of the product, or increasing the power of the product.

Miasma will be collected from around the city of Um and the surrounding area of Um. There will not be a single location to collect from. Miasma nodes will appear on buildings, trees, rivers, market stalls – whatever is in the underworld, Miasma can appear on it. However, it will not stay in one location for extended periods of time, and players will have to seek out other miasma nodes to continue the collection process.

Players will collect it into special vessels (proton packs), and when those are full they must empty it out into a miasma hopper. The hopper will take this miasma and process it through conversion machine into various tiers of potency. Players can increase the potency by improving the machine, and improvements to the machine will come from increases in Skillomancy level, items drops from Necromancy, and items collected from Skillomancy.

Skillomancy – the Artisan Skill

The miasma you have collected and refined can then be used in one of two ways: increase your potency in Necromancy rituals, or creation of spirits.

So what are these spirits?

When used, they will increase yield when gathering resources. If you think you’ve heard this before, you’d be correct. This will be the expansion of stone spirits to other skills.

“But I hate stone spirits!”

Don’t worry, this is an opportunity to improve on their usefulness – and reduce how much space they take in your banks!

How should spirits work?

When a spirit is created, it will remain ungendered. The idea is so that players can stock up on spirits and they only take up one bank space. When a player wishes to gender a spirit, i.e. turn it into a stone spirit, this process should take a matter of seconds and but may require further resources to help with balancing.

When the Mining and Smithing rework was released, we were promised that the metal bank would alleviate pressure on our banks. However, the current system for stone spirits has nullified these changes. Regardless of Skillomancy, I believe all stone spirits should be consolidated into a single stack item. Each type from bronze to animica should be converted into “stone spirits”, with each type converting to a different amount. For example:

- 1 copper spirit = 1 stone spirit
- 1 iron spirit = 2 stone spirits
- 1 coal spirit = 4 stone spirits
- 1 animica spirit = 50 stone spirits

Please note that these are only example numbers and it’ll be up to Jagex to balance them.

Now that we have a single type of stone spirit, they will be used in the same ratio as the conversion during the gathering process: 1 spirit will be used when mining copper, 4 spirits when mining coal, and 50 spirits per animica.

This consolidation of spirits should apply to other skills. For example, there will only be one “herb spirit”, and not “guam spirits”, “Ranarr Spirits” and “Spirit Weed Spirits”. There will be one “fish spirit”, not “shrimp spirits”, “salmon spirits” and “sailfish spirits”. One can only imagine the strain on the bank if so many items were released!

So what spirits should be available?

- Log spirits (Woodcutting)
- Herb spirits (Farming)
- Fish spirits (Fishing)
- Creature spirits (Hunter)
- Divine spirits (Divination)

Skillomancy – the Support Skill

The residents of Um did things differently back in the day. Methods of old slowly got replaced by methods of new, and ancient knowledge became lost to the passage of time. However, now that you can communicate with these residents, that old knowledge can return!

As these residents have lived in the Um plane for some time, they have also learned how things work slightly differently – and they’re willing to pass on this knowledge to those worthy.
So what kind of activities could be affected by Skillomancy. Here’s a list of a few ideas:

- Farming - Undead Herbs; These herbs can be used to create alternative potions that can be used on your Necromancy summons to keep them alive for longer, increase their strength, or improve their abilities.

- Thieving - summon distractions; move the pockets to another plane so you can rummage them without them noticing.

- Treasure Trails – residents may be able to help pinpoint exactly where you need to go, which may be particularly helpful for scan clues.

- Hunter – residents may impart ancient knowledge of the hunting skill, which allows for you to better camouflage yourself (passive boost).

- Construction – summon a long-deceased builder to help you complete your construction contracts faster.

- Combat Minigames – summon a hoard of undead to oppose you in combat minigames, with rewards rebalanced for this single-player mode.

How will Necromancy help Skillomancy?

In order to collect miasma, you will need a proton pack. Whilst you will be able to upgrade your pack through various level tiers ala pickaxes, hatchets, mattocks, etc., there will be special packs that will be dropped from Necromancy killed monsters. These special packs will offer different perks, as well as being augmentable.

Necromancy will also be required to obtain machine parts for your miasma processors. Some of these parts can be tradeable, and some may be untradeable.

In Distraction and Diversion form, miasma will sometimes leak into the living world. It’s up to you to use your Skillomancy to collect the miasma. However, it’s not just miasma that is leaking. Foes that are impervious to melee, range and magic will also appear, meaning that you will need to use your Necromancy skills to protect yourself.

Does the name need to be Skillomancy?

I’ve used this term as it’s a decent amalgamation of Necromancy and Skilling, which is exactly what I’m trying to describe. For an explanation point of view, this seems perfect, but from a gaming point of view, perhaps there are other names better suited. Even though they may not be 100% accurate, here are some ideas:

- Sorcery

- Mana

- Miasma Busting

- Medium

- Psychic

Additional ideas that didn’t fit into other headers:

- Ancient components - items that were used by those currently in the afterlife whilst they were in the pre-afterlife – i.e. there is potential lore to give these components more uses, likely in Necromancy.

- Spirit Hunter in Um - track spirits using hunter skills to obtain special Skillomancy items and miasma; mechanics to be similar to Big Game Hunter but not necessarily identical.

- BrunoNutto - perhaps we could have a logged-out use for our skeleton conjures too. Gathering resources on our behalf in a similar vein to Manage Thy Kingdom would not seem an unreasonable request.
