tl;dr - long crafting project for Construction that awards typical Construction XP for the task, but also gives the player access to another ship for Player Owned Ports.

Longer version:

We know Jagex has been reluctant to redo the PoH for various reasons. And most of their Construction methods were just another training method or were a 1-off (think the Flower Bins and Water Filtration at Het's Oaisis.)

So how about something a bit more ambitious?

When the player has 90 Construction and unlocked the 4 current ships in Player Owned Ports, Port Sarim's Shipyard will let the Portmaster build their own 5th Ship. To clarify: you build it.

This ship would function as a "Fifth Ship" for your port. Now whether this means the UI gets updated to literally add it as a 5th Ship, or the devs have a far more simplified use for the ship (ie: The Captain does Trade Good or Resource or a low XP Voyage ... like a watered down adventurer voyage) is up to Jagex.

Now, the ship building is literally that. Actual. Ship. Building.

Think of a hybrid for the process you do to make a Masterwork Armor Set or the Blessed Flask ... but instead of being a 1 time token amount of XP ... the process is an actual option for Skill Training.

The player would still need Mahogany Planks ... lots of planks. Likely nails, bolts of cloth and flax for the sails, rope, and other materials (it is a ship afterall).
Imagine needing 10-20k Planks to build this.

The goal of this is that it would be a 1 time training method that nets the player 1-3 million of base Construction XP. The time the player puts into it would be consistent with other Mahogany Plank training methods so it would take several in-game hours to build this ship. XP modifiers and Bonus XP would also apply. And much like the Blessed Flask and Masterwork Armor and Primal Feasts, it would have an actual use in game.

An example lore would be that the original contract for the PoP was for parking 4 ships.
So technically you can't park a 5th ship.
While there is a shade of grey of hiring a crew that acts independently, most business owners don't want to go that route as the ship wouldn't be insured and there is a risk of the ship getting stolen or the crew going rogue. A number of legit captains are reluctant to enter into this type of partnership as well since the ship technically isn't theirs either so they aren't in business for themselves.
It takes a rather cuthroat, aggressive, creative, insane, and successful Portmaster to keep an equally eccentric captain in their employ and in line. Luckily the Player is just that type of Portmaster. And there happens to be a Captain (with a maxed out crew) in need of a ship, looking for something to do and someone just as crazy to go into business with.

The concept could also be doubled if Jagex removed The Fishing Trawler Minigame.
The mechanics for building the Port 5th Ship would be the same as Building the new Trawler. Just you wouldn't have the same requirements to start (likely just needing a certain construction Level)

Lore could be that Murphy's ship finally sank. He's been waiting on any of the port docks to build him a new one. It's just they are backlogged.

There is an open slot to build a ship ... just no one to build it.

Murphy appears at PoP looking for a business partner. (He would still be at Port K too).

After you use the same process to build a ship for him he can become a monthly Fishing D&D where you can pay him to hire a crew and:
- Option 1: He hires a scrub crew, pockets the money, and comes back and teaches you about Fishing (you basically buy Fishing XP)
- Option 2: He hires a great crew and comes back with a lot of Fish (and any other rewards you might have gotten from the fishing trawler minigame)

On the note of 'actual ship building', there are dozens upon dozens of 'ancient' ship designs (some more ancient than others)

Would be cool to see some of those given a 'shout out' by the game.

I am not particularly well informed about that stuff, but I do know that there are charts showing all the different kinds of sails used by different ships, for example.

One thing that is a bit ridiculous but they had to do for video game logic reasons is how you modify your entire ships in the PoP minigame before the voyage. It would be nice to have a ship that you build yourself where your choices about how to build it actually matter. No insta-swapping that golden katana hull for a stormrider hull.

But as such it would also only make sense if it was used for a slightly different purpose, or at least in a slightly different way than the PoP ships.

Cool suggestion but it probably tickles a little too close to 'Sailing' for it to ever become a reality. :P

I like this suggestion. It would be nice to have different types/levels of ships that you can construct yourself at different construction levels. That way, as you continue to increases your construction level, you continue to have new objectives for improving your POP experience. I'm not a big fan of leveling for the sake of leveling. I find it much more interesting to be working towards a tangible goal.
You could start with a coracle made of straw at quite low level!

I like this idea, as well as all the other suggested additions that have been made so far :-) Things may be looking down now, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel;
Do you think I should get off the tracks?
