Note #1: The early yak tracks didn't have as many skill/kill options .... you had to do either firemaking OR Mining for a Task or Kill X creatures OR do a bunch of Agility Laps. Play X minigames OR do 4 treasure trails. Players wanted a degree of agency. So devs started making the Skill/Kill option more frequent.
Thus now why you can do a thing they suggest OR spend 30 minutes to 6 hrs skilling depending how far you are in the track.
Note #2: The Yak Tracks aren't intended to be completed that day (unless you're wanting to buy skip tokens)
If you're participating from the time it launches, then you've got like 6 weeks? 7 weeks? To do all 50 tracks. To be fair, the first 10 tracks can be completed fairly quickly. And there are usually a few "gimmes" that can be completed fairly quickly (ie: the chat with the yak track NPC, something like convert energy for divination, some oddball task like give an item to an NPC)
So unless you took a break from the game and only coming back in with 1-2 weeks in the Track, you can typically finish it.
Note #3: Yes, they push the MTX stuff (TH is always there when you log in). but, it is still "optional"
Note #4: This particular yak track is underwhelming when it comes to rewards in terms of cosmetics, even compared to previous tracks.
especially
for the non-premier track. So you might not be missing much. The Yak Coins require the premier track.
Now I do agree, not entirely fun to see the skill/kill start reaching the 5 and 6 hour point when you're only on like task 40 (not entirely an exaggeration).
tradeoff is that you've been given a degree of agency to pick and choose what activity you want to do. So if you're doing an AFKable skill, it's probably not going to hurt you.
(for me for example, on my main, I was working on 120 firemaking on the yak track for fall 2020. there were several firemaking tasks to burn logs. there were a number of the skill/kill/chill tasks ...
