Sea King is correct (can't believe i just said that), there is no way a screenshot validates anything 100%.. I'd say for the majority of people it being worth their time or capable to manipulate an image is a no. And those people that do try stick out like a soar thumb like Tuffy said if not capable.

Any image though is digital pixels and someone qualified enough can change those pixels so you would not be able to tell no matter how experienced you are at looking. So then technically a screenshot is worthless and the reason why some people don't bother taking the time to even post one.

The only defense we all have against fake screenshots is the eyes watching that can conflict a price. Unfortunately for all of us over max cash items can be manipulated pretty healthy as we see here. The game removal of max cash should help I think.

Sure, there are costs, but for some high-value items, the potential rewards from such bad behavior is immense.
If you are willing to chuck your most precious possessions like phats because someone said words like crashing/dying/quitting and then find yourself unable to rebuy for what you sold for, then you don't deserve to own a phat.

Can you clarify what you mean by a "valid screenshot?" How would you advise someone to tell the difference between an authentic screenshot versus an altered screenshot digitally edited using tools like Photoshop?

Thats the tricky part.

If I told you how they can be spotted then people making them would change the way they make them and make them even more convincing. ;)

Trust Me you can spot them a mile away if you know what to look for.

that goes not just for screenshots, but trades in general, if you do a routine check on people who post sketchy things that are out of the average trade you will definitely find concrete proof that it didnt happen, for example:

Q: how can an account with 39m exp for example afford a phat
A:because its an alt
Q:could it be the alt of the person who posted the trade/screenshot
A: depends if the trade is sketchy or not, if its a weird trade thats way above or under the average theres a high chance its a main trading with his alt.
Q: whats the average price.
A: the average price is the price made by the people who own the item
Q: if the price is made by the people who own the items how is it legit
A: thats why you should research alot before buying

^this feels like the circle were in at this point and i really hope that the new ge will change the research part into that the GE is responsible for a price set for an item.
jagex should be in control of the game and its items.

its not hard to figure out who is fair and who is false, its more difficult to punish the false behavior untill the ge update, after the update i expect some perma bans for rwt.
trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

Really looking forward to the ge update next year, as Raphtalia6 stated I feel like it'll solve most of the issues non-merchers wanting to buy a rare have.
Hoping it can breathe life into the (imo) dead rares market.

Finding out the low end of range

Go onto forums/discord and message a few people who trade rares. Tell them you're selling whatever rare.

They will ask you how much, you ask them for an offer.

Do that a few times and you will get an idea of the low end of the price range

You can also make an offer a few times and get a few counters to mix it up.

Finding out the high end of range

Same as finding the low end of the range but instead of saying you are selling, you say you are buying.

What not to do

Go of forum price check threads
Ask the advice of anyone who is not currently merching rares on a daily basis
Ask the advice of a merch who is not a very close friend

or just remove max cash limit.

and change algo for low volume item to update price more frequently. let GE do what it meant to do.

Hopefully one day this will be the reality
