For many years, players have debated what the true prices/price ranges of rares and other high-value items are in Item Discussion. They typically end with a statement along the lines of "you should do your own research".

But what does it mean to do your own research? As a veteran player, I'll list my ideas below along with their caveats. Others can feel free to contribute better ideas on how to figure out rare prices.

1. Browse Runescape forums

Note: Information provided is not moderated for authenticity.

2. Consult social media third party websites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Discord)

Note: Information provided on these sites cannot be moderated for authenticity.

3. Ask another player in-game who will give you the correct flip margins and unbiased information about prices.

Note: The player may have undisclosed conflicts of interest. Such conflicts of interest can result in material omissions/misrepresentations in the information provided to you.
If you are willing to chuck your most precious possessions like phats because someone said words like crashing/dying/quitting and then find yourself unable to rebuy for what you sold for, then you don't deserve to own a phat.

and change algo for low volume item to update price more frequently. let GE do what it meant to do.

Yeah, it would be good if the GE guide price was updated more frequently to reflect actual past trades for low volume items, but that's up to Jagex unfortunately.

I think only the players who regularly trade in the market can actually determine the prices. Losing several bill of gp learning the margins is the so called price of doing business.

Getting a somewhat accurate number to understand some kind of margins is best off doing a buy/sell offer in game and waiting around a week to see what the ballpark is and picking a number high/lower depending if you are selling/buying
Mass contributor to deaths coffers.

What you describe also highlights an important dimension of the problem. Using your suggested approach, the cost of "research" is several billion gp PLUS tons of time wasted. Why? Because there's basically no price discovery .

It's simple for me really. When I plan buying any Discontinied items and I do from time to time and post ALL trades within the Discontinued items thread with a screenshot as proof. I keep my eyes firmly within the Forums and in this section as well as the Discontinied items Section and watch other peoples trades. Also keep my eye on the Discontinued Items Status thread for trades and if they come with a valid screen shot I add that to my extensive notes before buying an item. I could take a week, month or 6+ months before buying anything though as I love doing research. :P

1 thing I do not do and never have is I never use outside sources. Example Social Media as I don't use it. It either comes from the Forums or World 2 or my own research.

As for selling thats a differnt issue. I don't sell only collect. :P Again thats down to research and could take a while till I'm happy with the price if I was to sell anything. Also catching up on the ~Discontinued Item Status V**~ thread to see the sales I can confirm along with credable screen shots. For Me thats a must really to see 1. Without I'm not counting it. Thats just me though it's how I do my own personal reaseach. ;)

When i try to find the right price i watch the prices of items hover for a few weeks and watch the low end and the high end of the items.

after that i ask people i trust about their take on the items in question and with that i make my choice to either buy or wait.

for selling i just focus on making profit, but without getting greedy because that will get you bankrupt, go for small amounts and steady and dont go for big time or big fails, a bit like how people used to chuck their partyhat in the duel arena and lose and are left with nothing vs doing 10-20m at a time till you can upgrade your input.
trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

Can you clarify what you mean by a "valid screenshot?" How would you advise someone to tell the difference between an authentic screenshot versus an altered screenshot digitally edited using tools like Photoshop?

+10 What a great idea, Why not let GE do what it should do not control prices.

Best personal advice to learn a price is sit on one spot long enough to learn what people will buy for and sell for (the real margin). This could take minutes to days, depending on the item and a lot of w2 standing unfortunately. But that is the best way to learn any item price, once your actually see the transactions in front of your eyes you tend to feel more conformable jumping in. And then at the end of the day all you did was learn the margin for that time and period so jumping in at the right time is maybe more critical than getting too wrapped up in current margins or screenshots.

Thats the tricky part.

If I told you how they can be spotted then people making them would change the way they make them and make them even more convincing. ;)

Trust Me you can spot them a mile away if you know what to look for.
