It is a big skilling update with a 2 part miniquest and a 2 week event. Sounds very cool but it is no digsite.
Itchlarin is helping out and last we heard he is looking for another way to solve Great Revision problem. Scarabs seem to be involved in many rewards. A thought here.... Scarab symbolizes the Sun God Ra in Egyptian mythology... and in Gielinor manifestation of the Ball of Light is of course, Tumeken who also created Het and the crocodile Goddess Crondis...
I have to wonder what is going to happen to the quest "Our Man in the North", as the boss fight for it took place in the Duel Arena, even going so far to reference it's mechanics.

Given that they're not retconning the Duel Arena from existence, just destroying it, I don't imagine much will change. It'll be like how Ratcatchers is centered around a minigame that hasn't existed for years. Besides, it's likely that Our Man in the North will canonically be set before the events of the Elder God Wars, so it's not like they'll have to rewrite the quest to accommodate for the fact that the Arena is in ruins now.
Worst case scenario, the quest is bugged for a week or two before someone reminds Jagex that OMitN takes place there.

This brings up the biggest issue with the
Desert Quest series, namely that Jagex finishing it would allow the Menaphite Pantheon to be brought into the Sixth Age and current Elder God Wars storyline
. Two Younger Gods,
Tumeken
and
Elidinis
, plus the
bau of Tumeken
(Apmeken, Crondis, Het, and Scabaras). Icthlarin is already heavily involved in the Elder God Wars, but the Desert Quest series not being complete prevents Jagex from bringing the rest of the Menaphite Pantheon into the fray. This MUST be rectified and hopefully Het’s Oasis is a sign that a sequel to
Phite Club
is in the works. I do not know about the rest of you, but I want to find Scabaras, reunite the
bau of Tumeken
, and deal with Amascut once and for all.

a part of me is surpised they didn't go an mtx route
ie: 5-10 runecoins per stake at a certain limit, 2-3x for a higher limit, pay 10-12 bonds to permanently remove your limit on stakes (other person would still be capped)

There is no saying Jagex make such "PvP Arena" in lieu of Duel Arena in their games, just that it is obviously not what there plan in Het's Oasis in RS3.

Agreed. Besides, the Duel Arena has been obsolete ever since the ability to challenge other players to a duel anywhere was released.

The reason they're scrapping Staking (and by extension, the DA as a whole) is most likely upcoming legislation tightening restrictions on gambling in video games; they literally can't do what you say.
A couple of years ago, the UK Parliament called in Jagex (and, I'm all but certain, other UK-based video game developers) to testify about their MTX practices as part of a larger discussion on MTX in video games (remember how this topic blew up when Star Wars Battlefront II introduced their pay-to-win lootboxes and it became a big, mainstream issue that various governments take notice? This was part of that). During those hearings, the Duel Arena (more specifically, how people were spending real money on Bonds and black market RWT on gold/equipment to stake with) was explicitly, directly called out as something that, while technically legal at the time, would almost certainly need to go once new legislation passed.
Now, the wheels of the government machine usually turn very slowly (certain governments, like Belgium, were quick to act on this, but they were the exception, and it's really only the risk of losing big markets like the US and their home country that would be enough to make them give up such a big part of their business model), but it's been long enough now that such legislation is finally on the horizon. Jagex has been adjusting their business model in the past few months (see: some of the recent TH changes, renewed interest in making cosmetics to sell directly on the Marketplace instead of putting them behind TH after years of Solomon's being completely neglected) in preparation for that legislation, and the sands of time are finally running out for the DA, just like they were warned.
