Where did/do these folks reside in Edgeville? There doesn't seem to be much choice.
And where is Lumford located?

Never heard of Lumford before. Never heard of other dukes besides Horacio before Fort Forinthry either. RS3 isn't adding these things for no reason. I think something interesting on the political side of Misthalin is cooking, now that we have a new kitchen in our player owned fort for it. :)

I sent a team of explorers out to find the location of Lumford not long ago. Only one of them made it back.

The suspected location is west of Varrock and South of the GE. In this area is the cooking guild, the air altar, Gertrude's house and a popular goblin park.

It was thought the area might stretch south along the river into the farmlands, but dialogue in the quest suggested that is not the case.

The devs might have some other spot in mind, but then I have to wonder why is it called Lumford?

Oh, Dilbert.

1. The mark for the killer was King Roald, not Queen Ellamaria. We know this because we deduce Roald's death would be the most effective way to take revenge on Ellamaria right before we make our accusation, and because there are only two dinner-attendees who receive the dish that would go on to be poisoned. Roald (due to allergy concerns), and Duke Hoarse. The killer gave each man the wrong plate, but both got an appetizer that none of the other guests got.

As for "-Z", I'm going to assume regime change in Misthalin would cause the area instability, which would make Varrock more susceptible to invasion. The only thing we know about them is that they are Zamorakian.

2. The newspost isn't likely to be talking about future happenings beyond the quest it is about because it would run the risk of spoiling the quest to the reader. The excerpt you provided is likely describing the tense situation between nobles at a state dinner that have competing interests as well as genuine disdain because of how one another has acted in the past.

We see them get to the political when particularly addressing the Duchess of Lumford. Lady Hyett and the crown get into a spat about food stores during a famine, in which the former believes the latter makes too much of a demand, and the latter has complaints of a lack of communication and believes Lumford was at a surplus. Even the isolated parties get into the personal too - as Hyett prepares a dish with nuts out of spite for the King's family, knowing full well he is allergic. Everything the newspost alludes to in your excerpt happens within the quest.

---

The player is only "important" in this quest because they play detective. Yes, they have an immense reputation at this point, with resume points of being a World Guardian and what not, but our killer only deploys their assassin against us when we threaten to expose them.

Ellamaria isn't ever attacked at all.

The Lumford Castle is said to be bigger than the Lumbridge Castle. Lumford must be too big to put on the Misthalin map now. Lumford has the most fertile land in Misthalin so when the Fort Forinthry war comes it may serve as a food supply source.

I don't know what is the usefulness of Edgeville though. I'll suspect eventually Duke of Fort Forinthry will put up a reclamation project on it.

thought I read that lumford only exists in the novels and isn't present in game. only included to let us know that the real world of runescape is much bigger than the actual one we play on. which to me is ridiculous, they should update the map then instead of have us 'imagine' a bigger world. honestly after 20+ years they've had plenty of time to do it. tired of imagining, how about spending the actual time to build this big map, the game map could use a revamp Buy Zemomarks / Chromatic Partyhats safely here

Lumford is simply a canonical area that isn't represented by the game's map. I don't believe it is found in the novels (although someone could easily correct me on this, I've only read 'Betrayal at Falador'.)

The etymology of the name of the duchy, Lumford, involves the name of a nearby river, the River Lum, along with ford , which is a shallow river crossing.

If you were to picture the area with your mind's eye, it would be Lumbridge, but instead of a big bridge being the village's feature landmark outside of the noble's residence, it's that people and livestock can walk from one side of the Lum to the other in shallow water.

I couldn't see RuneScape getting scaled up and adding more areas without incredibly major changes, and I don't think it has the playerbase at the moment to justify such a project.

I don't have a problem with scale theory and imagination, so long as major plot or characters aren't sent into the hypothetical and it remains areas of little consequence that can be used to generate new interesting NPC's, like this quest did. That isn't to say I don't want an expanded game of course.

There is. a new duchess. of Edgeville. We only know this because Rodney mentions how the duchy exchanged hands and resulted in his and Princess' ouster from the area.

The noble of Forinthry has legitimately no claim, whatsoever, over the duchy of Edgeville.

What content in the story mode usually will show up in live game mode. For instance, Iaia and Freneskae were myths in story modes for years, but now they area real live game content. Same went with Underworld, Erebus and such. RS3 is expanding and keep expanding. We are going to see Lumford and a remastered Edgeville under the command of the Duke of Fort Forinthry. The question is just when.

I suspect the residents of Lumford are exaggerating the size of their town.

Duke Alba actually said Lumford is not very big, but its castle is bigger than the Lumbridge Castle. Lumford is also the most fertile area in Misthalin while Duke Horacio told us Lumbridge is, although apparently bigger, broke in nature due to years of conflicts and lack of production.

Moral of the tale of the two Misthalin cities is there are hidden riches and prosperity and lots of potentials in the invisible Lumford, but the "huge" Lumbridge is just a shell. It is on life support and hanging on their fingernails only on the donations of an exiled god.
