I think Jagex has actually gone too far the other way already: NO method of making planks should come without a GP cost!
Construction was originally envisaged as a GP sink, and the game needs that right now more than ever.
That basically was over whenever the invention machines were introduced. At most some players will have used a portable sawmill then, since the spell basically was broken the very second those were introduced for non-ironmen, due to some weird, random 2006 design.
Why should a machine even require gp to operate. Likewise some spell. But honestly we currently have the following setup
- Bill: Fast and expensive, the portable sawmill is a replication of him, which is a bit cheaper, but otherwise works the same
- Sawmill: Slow and free, gives a bit of token xp - but yeah... have fun getting all your planks this way. There is
literally
a reason why bill's paid service was reintroduced shortly afterwards.
- Invention Machine: Free in gp, needs energy, only converts a fairly limited amount per day
- Lunar spell: Its only strength basically was the instant conversion at the cost of paying runes on top of the gold fee. But basically with bill being next to a bank - why does this spell even exist now? I guess if it was just runes instead of gold it could be an alternative...
