On Reddit they are saying you get saved by one of the NPC's if you die.

I wish I would have done that, I missed part of the story.

Don't know, but I read comments from some players we will always beat the assassin because when our HP gets down to a low level, Princess will come over and kill the assassins for us. Noice doggie!

Yes it is possible with recoils - a clan mate of mine has done so.
