Pets normally cause dropped frames at events on machines that cannot render many things at once. Players, pets, NPCs and any other moving object with animations is bad news for systems not built for graphically-intensive tasks.
The server issue is likely them being cheap and sticking with the same servers they've used for years because they see no point upgrading to something better (due to player count and # of people connected per world on average). Unless we see a massive spike in players, we'll barely notice how bad the servers are at keeping up.
