Skype

Used for -
Instant messaging (single person or group of people), voice and video calls (single person or group of people), file sharing, status updating.
Public Profile -
No (Your username can appear on the public directory if you chose so)
Other -
IP can be shown to anyone who knows your username (they don’t even need you added on Skype)

Skype is one of those programs you should only be giving out to people you trust, and even then, the program should be avoided entirely as there are now better alternatives. Skype has stated that IPs no longer show by default, however there are still some programs that can see through their setting. You may also be sent harmful files (like the .jar one below) disguised as screenshots, so always remember to look at file extensions!

To view file extensions:

¤
Folder Options > View > Uncheck 'hide extensions for known file types'

Settings that should be changed:

Make sure you have the same settings I have shown in the red boxes below. It is important to have 'automatically accept files' box ticked
OFF
as you don’t want to be sent anything harmful.

¤
Tools > Options > IM & SMS > IM settings
¤
Select Allow IMs from ‘ people in my Contact list only
¤
Uncheck ‘ automatically accept files ’ if it’s checked

Both Skype pictures used from AOROX’s previous thread ‘BEWARE: .jar File Circulation’ with his permission.

Skype (Continued)

NOTE:
The following steps are for Windows PCs as that’s what I use. I will try to include OSX and Linux if I find a friend or existing guide to share it.

Hiding your IP:

¤
Tools > Options > Advanced > Connection
¤
Use port ‘ 32535 ’ for incoming connections
¤
Check ‘Use port 80 and 443 for additional incoming connections’
¤
Select ‘HTTPS’ from the dropdown menu
¤
Put the Host as ‘ 127.0.0.1 ’ and the Port as ‘ 40031
¤
Uncheck ‘ Enable Proxy Authentication ’ if it’s checked
¤
Uncheck ‘ Enable uPnP ’ if it’s checked
¤
Press ‘ Save

Changing your IP:

¤
Sign out of Skype
¤
Quit Skype
¤
End any ‘ Skype.exe ’ processes running in the background using Task Manager
¤
If you don’t know how to use the Task Manager to find processes, just restart your PC
¤
Go to ‘ whatismyipaddress.com ’ to check your current IP address (write this down)
¤
Method 1: Turn off your modem/router for 5-10 minutes, which should change your IP address (if Dynamic)
¤
Method 2: Call up your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and ask them to change your IP address

If you’ve followed all the steps correctly, then your IP address shouldn’t be shown when using Skype.

TeamSpeak

Used for -
Instant messaging (single person or group of people), voice calls (single person or group of people), profiles.
Public Profile –
Yes, to anyone on the server you’re joining (Servers are usually private unless they’re listed on the TS Directory)
Other -
IP can be shown to server owners and admins

Once you connect to a server, there’s nothing that can be done to hide your IP address to server owners and admins, which is why it’s very important to only join servers sent to you from people you trust. If you’re not a server owner or admin, you’re unable to view another users IP address (shown below in red), so you’re safe from possible hijackers joining the TeamSpeak server and gaining your IP that way (unless of course, they’re an owner or admin).

While on a server, you’re viewable to everyone on that server, however you don’t have a traditional profile like on other social media, such as name, date of birth, pictures, etc. You have the option to upload a picture on your profile, but that’s pretty much all.

Downloads:

It's fairly difficult to send files through Teamspeak, but to be sure you don't get anything nasty, have the same setting shown below in the red box:

Settings > Options > Downloads

The other options shown are just personal preference.

Links:

Whenever a link is sent to you (website, email, another Teamspeak server), the TeamSpeak client will always have this pop up warning you that you're clicking something that goes to an external source. It is recommended to
NEVER
tick the 'I know the risk, don't show again
'.
