Thank you YtHaar-Mej.

It looks like it will be very hard to bring up a specific topic, like we have here in the General forum, and have a focused discussion on that without interrupting or being interrupted by other conversation topics.

However, it looks like some of the sub-categories do have threads, such as game-suggestions.

I wonder why some do have threads, and others don't. From a personal point of view, threads make discussions much easier, whereas the live chat is just for "in the now" conversations.

It's going to be different, and different is a scary thing to comprehend, but I guess I'll have to get used to it.

What are the similarities and differences when posting ideas and suggestions for RS?

I used Discord for another game.

At the time, I did not use it for in-depth discussion.

It was great for organising events, getting support and having informal chats on the go.

I've never seen a discord server use the forum function. Most people don't use Discord that way and I heard some people complain about it. I get the impression it's not a popular feature.

Discord's pretty bad for archiving. I was once on a wiki discord where a mod deleted almost all of the channels under claims of inactivity/redundancy. There was no notice before doing this, the members still active there were largely upset with it and it pretty much killed any remaining desire/ability for anyone to keep talking there. There's a limit to how many channels you can have on a server and they're pretty tedious to backtrack through for older discussions, so it's pretty easy to permanently lose things there. Generally only smaller groups will look up and bring back older discussions.

Larger servers tend to be less active. Large groups become overwhelming and lots of people talking at the same time gets difficult to keep up with. It also gets draining to scroll through all the messages, so it's more likely for people to completely skip things they were there for. You can only be sure the people actively talking or reacting to your posts have actually read them.

Official servers for things like games are generally most useful for news notifications. A lot of them set up systems to curate what you want notifications for. That's also part of why most people on them aren't active in them. As far as engaging conversations go, a smaller unofficial server is better but would fail to address the issue of a place to give feedback that's easily seen by Jmods and accessible to the RS community as a whole.

You know, I've actually seen some things that have an official discord and an official forum. The forum is the main place they use for feedback, suggestions and support, while the discord is for live notifications, live chatting and scheduled news update/feedback sessions.
