Jennicas ring-cant find portal

HI all, back playing rs after years away and trying to use jennicas ring for thieving in wildy.

I lost the ring originally, got another one from the edge of wildy but everytime i try and operate the ring it just says cant find a portal. I am lost on how to get this thing to work and tried the usual Google search but nothing help.

Are you sure you are standing directly on top of the portal before operating the ring?
