Should it possible to kill the Dramen Tree Spirit using only rings of recoil? or is it necessary to attack it at least once, even if no damage is caused, before letting the ring kill it?

I have tried chopping the tree and killing the spirit without attacking it and it will not let me chop a branch.

You will have to inflict damage to the evil spirit tree in order to get the kill credit if I am not mistaken. Ooh, shiny things!
