Hello,

Barbarian Fishing is a special barbarian method of Fishing. It can be learned by members, with level 48 Fishing, level 15 Agility, and level 35 Strength, by speaking to Otto Godblessed in his home near Baxtorian Falls.

First, he instructs the player on heavy rod fishing. Heavy rod fishing requires a barbarian rod (found under Otto's bed) and any type of bait, as well as a knife to gut the fish. In order to catch the special fish in Otto's lake, a Strength and Agility level is needed in addition to the fishing requirement. The leaping fish obtained can be used with a knife to obtain roe and caviar for use in Herblore skill, and cat.

After this, the player can learn how to fish tuna, swordfish, and sharks without a harpoon. Using this method requires a higher Fishing level as well as a Strength level equivalent to the Fishing level needed to catch the fish normally. However, it provides small amounts of Strength experience. When you are catching swordfish via barbarian methods, you will still receive tuna along with swordfish if you have the required levels for both. Also after the tool belt update, if you have the required strength level you will by default catch via the barbarian method. If a player would like to catch fish using a harpoon, for example if they have the required level to bare-hand catch tuna but not swordfish, they will have to bring a second harpoon in their inventory, or alternatively wield a Barb-tail harpoon.

That 'cookbook' response is pitiful...dude - you have been playing for 1 month and now you are an expert? Your post does not address my issue. Please read my specific issues.
As to multiple posts, I only posted twice and am looking for a Jagex reply, not some frankly useless post that was copied from wiki...Jagex used to troll posts regularly to help players out, now it seems they ignore them...
The forums are not what they used to be...only a few users who do not appear to be at all knowledgeable...
Thanks anyway.

This is Community Led Tech Support so most replies are going to be from regular players. The J-mods sometimes post here but most likely, if someone helps you, the help will come from a regular player. It's been that way for a long time even before the Community Led part was added to the forum name and before forum activity declined to the point it is at now.

If you've found a bug then the correct way to notify the J-mods about it is to use the in-game reporting system. I read you did that already. Normally, players don't get replies to bug reports. If your issue is caused by a bug then there isn't much we regular players can do about it.

Unfortunately I don't have an explanation for why the bare handed fishing isn't working for you. Maybe the harpoon on your tool belt has priority over bare handed fishing but I don't know. I'd go in game to check if I have the same problem but I don't have membership right now.

This thread has been moved to a more relevant Forum, where you should find better results.

(The Community Led Technical Support Forum is for getting assistance with getting the game to run on your computer or mobile device, rather than for solving in-game issues or bugs.)

Have you tried bare-handed fishing for tuna or swordfish? If so, does that work? Is it just sharks that are giving you trouble, or all bare-handed fishing?

Thanks to everyone who replied and tried to make suggestions!
Tried swordfish, same harpoon animation. Tried harpoon in inventory and out of inventory, same harpoon animation. No fishing tools wielded.
Now I am 97 fishing and no change...still harpoon animation.
I did Barbarian training so long ago I don't remember my levels at the time. I am thinking that maybe I wasn't at the right level for any barehanded fishing at the time and didn't somehow complete the fishing protocol correctly at the time. However, I can't seem to re-do the barbarian protocols from Otto and just going through all the steps again (which I tried to no avail) doesn't change anything...still stays with the harpoon animation.
There must be some 'bit' not set in my profile that prevents the animation, even though everything else checks out. Unfortunately I have no way in game to reset or re-do anything.
It would be NICE if JAGEX would REPLY PLEASE!!

Check this link for all barbarian training tasks:
https://runescape.wiki/w/Barbarian_Training
Completed section mentions a way to check if you really finished barbarian training.

You can also visit Otto Godblessed in the barbarian fishing area (south of barbarian outpost tele using games necklace) and talk to him. He'll give you a book 'Barbarian skills' which tracked your progress in the barbarian training.
Completed book has the 21 pages (22 is empty) and the last section is about one-handed spears.

I have gone over all the Barbarian Fishing steps very carefully...as I said in the initial post, I VERIFIED it by checking the requirements for the Hero's Welcome Quest...

I am hoping Jagex reads this or responds to my bug reports...

Meanwhile if anyone KNOWS the answer or issue, please let me know!

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions but to no avail so far...

Thank God I am not the only one with this problem...

I have wasted over 2 hours now tryining to get the achievement "Fremennik Export" where you have to fish a shark barehanded in Burgh de Rott.

He keeps using the harpune in the tool-Belt.

- Maxed
- No Skill Drainage -> Stats normal
- Completed the Barbarian Training
- I have the achievement "Master Otto"
- Relogged and restarted client
- Empty Inventory and empty gear
- also tried barefishing in Catherby (Tuna, Swordfish, Sharks)

This seems to be a bug that needs fixing...
