Whenever you turn your computer off they won't be turned on when you log back in. You can turn them off by pressing the same keys that you pressed to turn them on (left shift+left alt+num lock). If you want to have them one press of a button away, just press the num lock and you will disable them and you can use the keypad again, but if you press the num lock again you will be able to use the keys again! There is a little icon on your toolbar that shows a mouse when you turn them on, so you can see if you have them enabled or disabled.
