Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but it's even easier for us mac users than your guide leads on.
If you go to system preferences>international there is a box you can check for a "keyboard viewer". Check this box, then click the small flag at the top of the screen and click "show keyboard viewer". A mini version of your keyboard should show up on the screen.
Now when ever you hold alt, alt+shift and/or have the caps lock on, it will show a little picture of the symbol for each keys alt code.
So if you hold alt, the keyboard viewer will show a º where the 0 key is.
Hoped this helped.
(this also works for typing in other languages, but not on rs)
Edit: The alt code for typing in caps/the scramble effect ingame for a mac is: alt+shift+-
