The RuneScape Forums will be disabled this coming Thursday, January 25, 2024 and then ultimately removed on Thursday March 28, 2024. In light of this, I figured I'd make one last thread for old time's sake for my clan in the Forum section where it all began - the Specialist Clan Forum. Classic Forum art and all. :D
Also, love the retro smileys - when did these come back? They're missing their little Fremennik helmets though.


I made the first thread for the RNC back in March or April of 2006, so nearly 18 years ago after completing Rogues’ Den after a number of runs. In those days, the Forums were a primary form of communication for all sorts of groups - clans, academies, businesses, guilds, parties, the next Linkin' Park RSMV, etc. Keep in mind, this was well before the first variation of the Clan Chat would be released in August 2007 - so if you wanted to organize en masse without using third-party resources (which most players were highly skeptical of in circa 2006 and you could also get banned for advertising them) - you used the Forums.



Actually, come to think of it - the first thread may have actually been on the Events Forum rather than this area because "clan" was not universally accepted terminology for describing groups during this time and would not be until Jagex formally adopted it in 2007. If you would have asked me if the RNC was a "clan" in 2006, I would had some over-the-top, pompous response about how the RNC was an organization, not a clan; clans engaged in habitual PvP and wars and the RNC did not do that. Whatever, we operated on the Specialist Clan Forum the most through the years, so we’re just going to end the Forum journey in this area. This Forum never got much love anyway, which is why RNC threads from 2013 are still in existence to this day lol.

Back then, when you wanted to create a clan (or equivalent), rather than going to the Clan Camp in-game, you went to the Forums, laid out your ideas, and hoped that somebody would give your idea some interest. I had a few projects prior to the RNC, but I'll never forget the thrill of watching the RNC become my first successful idea to really resonate with people. Those first bites - people filling out an application to join the clan. In retrospect, some of those applications led to 10+ year-long friendships and memories that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It’s hard to put into words how much this clan changed my life and me as a person - and how that all came to be because I posted a thread on the Forums.

One of the best things about the Forums was that it was just essentially just a blank canvas – it was what you made it. This led to so many fantastically creative designs, especially for clans (or equivalents). Different themes, ranking structures, hierarchies. When I wasn’t able to be online, one of my favorite things to do back then was sit with my sketchpad and write out what I wanted to create on the Forums later.



For example, in some of the earliest designs for the RNC, I wanted to have four different subgroups within the RNC:



I couldn’t tell you nowadays what any of the above means, but this is just to illustrate how there were no restrictions in how you designed clans back then. There was no set number of ranks, no one linear path to follow. You could do whatever you wanted. And man – for a bunch of mostly 12- to 16-year-olds at the time, we came up with a lot. Player-owned cities, Medici Corp, ninja academies – we did it all.

For the RNC, we primarily used our threads on the Forums to share announcements (meeting dates, upcoming events), to post “mission” (event) reports, to manage our point system, and to recruit new members.


There's those lil' Fremmy helms I was talkin' about.

Prior to the creation of our offsite, the Forums was our bread and butter and was the primary support for the clan’s operations for a number of years. It was our primary communication tool to stay in touch offline.



We also apparently the Forums for the occasional karaoke night...



...and to commit apparent acts of war on other clans by swapping out their recruiting video with a homemade video parody on their Clan Wikia page:




Don't worry, this is all water under the bridge now. Also, this video is still available on YouTube - search Kingdom of Varrock Guards YMCA (2011) if interested.


Back then, when threads got that much routine activity on them (along with the habitual bumping to make sure your clan was consistently on the front page), it didn’t take very long to hit page 200 and have to make a new thread. Whenever our threads got close to the end, we used to do thread killing parties where we’d all spam the remainder of the thread, fighting to be the very last poster.

While I think this is ultimately the right move by Jagex as the Forums are no longer able to compete with the likes of Discord and Reddit, this is an incredibly bittersweet moment and definitely represents the end of an era. I wanted to share that I remain grateful for this tool that connected me with my would-be clan members and friends. The tool that taught the 12-year-old me that I had ideas worth sharing. The tool that helped us cultivate our clan and create experiences, skills, and memories that would last well beyond our childhood.

Bump cause shiki told me to.
I remember looking at the forum ages ago for clan meetings, or looking to see what skills i needed to qualify for the next rank up. And getting jelly seeing Killer19508 get rank ups before me or my brother (old nite1100 or doc demon 57, forget at what point i accidentally got his account hacked). some of the best memories i have from this game started on this forum. RIP to one of the ways that brought the heartfelt meaning to being a runescape clan, and to RNC
