Firemaking is one of the most boring skills in runescape, its long tedoius, bot filled and above all theres no profit involved.
Items needed: Logs, Tinderbox (search old mans house in draynor for a free one) *optional* Hatchet.
As in all skills, you start at lvl 1. From this point Burn normal logs, until you reach around level 17. Note how i said level 17, as oak logs can be burnt at level 15. This is because at level 15, you will take a while trying to light the logs.
Now you have reached this level,you can burn oak logs. Oaks are less common then normal logs, but many are found in the forrests of RS. There are some in the varrock palace grounds, a great place to cut them for firemaking as there are no bots. Burn oak until level 32 / 33, as this will allow you to sucessfully burn willow logs easier (which become available at 30 firemaking). Personally, i would continue with willows until you reach level 60.
After this, the fastest way to reach level 99 is by Maple logs, this being if you want to save money. * Note that members could burn teak or artic pine. Yews and Magic logs are a bad decision, as the cost to much and you will basically be burning your money. Unless you have a few million coins to waste, i strongly advise against this.

**Note, at any one time, you can have 27 logs in your inventory, including your tinderbox.
Mini games / Distractions and divertions.
You can get firemaking exp from beacon lighting.
Burning Evil Tree Kindleing gives you a decent amount of free exp.
Light sources.
Candles, Black candles and tourches all require level 1
