Shard of Bone

A knock can be heard on the other side of the lab door.
“Sir, the energy you have requested has arrived”
said the voice on the other side.
“Ah Excellent!”
Artemis put down his tools and made his way to the door.

Upon opening the door, several men brought in three containers of varying energy types. Each container was set down by one of his many workbenches. The containers were labeled and as the workers left, he inspected each. The first container had bright blue energy glowing from within. It was labeled
“Luminous.”
Artemis moved to the next container that was nearby. The label on it was
“Radiant”
and he recognized the dull blue glow from the energies of Dragontooth Island. Lastly, there was a much darker energy in the final container and it was smaller than the other two. The energy was a deep blood red and the container was labeled with the word
“Kruluk.”

Artemis returned to the laboratory door and locked it. He did not want any disturbances during his work. It took him several minutes, but he cleared off one of the larger of his worktables. He placed a particular bone shard in the center.
“And now it begins…”
he muttered to himself.

He walked over and picked up the
“Luminous”
container and brought it to the workbench. Carefully, he opened the container and before he could react, the bone shard had flung itself into the energy seeming to absorb the energy collected inside. The glow from the container dulled quickly. In a matter of moments, the energy was drained dry. Artemis quickly took notes.
“As suspected, the shard of the Kruluk staff still absorbs energy. Must be mindful of testing other varieties.”

Artemis turned around as he heard the bone shard clatter to the bottom of the energy container. He sighed and returned to pick it up. As he went to grab it, there was a feeling of power in his hands. The energy that was drained must have powered up the piece. He returned it to the center of his worktable and jotted more notes down.
“Power grows within the shard as energy gets absorbed by it. May be useful as a weapon of some sort.”

The container of
“Radiant”
energy was next. The demon walked towards it and then stopped in thought. He returned to the worktable and picked up the glowing bone. He placed it within the
“Luminous”
container and shut the lid. Artemis turned back to retrieve the
“Radiant”
container. After placing it down near the work area, he carefully opened it. The bone remained silent and stayed in the bottom of its container. He reached within and grabbed at the humming energy.

After obtaining several memories, he reclosed the container and proceeded to open the
“Luminous”
container. The bone again did nothing. He placed the memories around the shard and watched as the bone slowly rose and absorbed the memories. The shard wobbled and then the light blue glow shifted into a dark blue, nearly matching the coloration of the memories it had absorbed.

Once again, he opened the container of
“Radiant”
energies and watched over the bone. It wobbled again but then laid to rest within its container. Artemis returned to his notes,
“Seems as there is a limit that the fragment can absorb. Kruluk must have had absolute control of its abilities. This leads me to think that over time, maybe it would prove useful to weakening energy based beings and creations.”

Artemis closed the
“Radiant”
container, keeping the bone shard within it. He moved towards his weapons rack. The rack had several varieties of staffs, swords, and above it on a shelf, several bows were present as well. He looked at the staffs and chose one that caught his eye. A demonic skull staff seemed appropriate for placing the shard in for use. Artemis returned to the workbench and started chipping away a place for the shard to sit in the skull.

After about two hours, the hole was complete. Artemis obtained the broken shard of Kruluk and slid it into the carefully chipped hole. It was a near perfect fit. As he placed the shard within the hole, the shard sealed itself within the skull. He picked up the newly made staff and walked over to the table where the
“Kruluk”
energy was waiting.

There were small flecks of blood on the container. Artemis shrugged, must had been harder than he thought to obtain the energies of the fountain. He opened the container and pointed the staff towards it to absorb the energy. The energy flowed from the container to the demon staff’s mouth, absorbing every morsel that was within the container. The eyes of the staff glowed with the same blood red color of the energy as before. Unlike the previous trials however, it maintained the glow for much longer before slowly ebbing away.

Pleased with the day’s work, he walked over to an empty glass weapon case. Artemis opened the case and set the new staff inside. Once he closed the case, he labeled it
“The Staff of Kruluk”
and set the label in its place on the case. Artemis blew out the candles within the lab and made his way out, relocking the door behind him.

Sitting at his desk, Rnoy would sift through documents and parchments, his gaze scanning over each word with care. April, his prized pupil and possible understudy, would hover over his shoulder.

"Your lurking is not going to make me read this any faster..." The girl would step back, her eyes dropping to the floor. "Yes, Sir... Sorry.." He clenched his jaw, his eyes moving from the papers to her. "And stop doing that..." "Huh?" Her eyes widened and would move to meet his own. "Stop what?" Her voice obviously fearful she did something terribly wrong.

"Apologizing for everything... You must build confidence..." Returning to the work at hand, Rnoy muttered under his breath, "And a voice." As if to counter, April's soft-hearted whisper echoed in his ear, as if she leaned down, and just in spite of him, in her most modest of tones, muttered back "I'm sorry..."

He snapped his head back around to see the girl was standing silent and stoic, staring at him innocently. His brows narrowed as he began to turn back once more, that was until a rattle came crom across the room.

Kruluk's staff began to shake in it's stand. "Um, Sir.." April's mousy voice muttered behind him. "I see it." Rnoy stared at the staff. The weapon had been dormant since he unleashed it's wrath in the wilderness, why would it show signs of life now?

The staff shook once more. Slowly standing from chair, he moved around his desk and approached, but did not touch. April followed suit, but remained behind him, peeking over his shoulder. "What do you think it's doing?" "I'm not sure..."

The rattling continued for what seemed to be hours. The two of them simply observing. "Seems as though it's responding to something, but cannot reach whatever it is..." Rnoy finally concluded. "But what would that be..." "Well, if it's not within this room.. I obviously couldn't tell you, now could I?" He smirked back at the girl, who gave him a worried smile in return.

Their gazes snapped from one another as something different sounded from the staff. A hissing sound. Rnoy's brows arched in wonder as the staff, which had presented itself much tamer after his use of it, was now contorting in appearance once more.

The sound of hissing and crackling echoed throughout the room as the staff took up it's original appearance. "Well that's... that's not good." Rnoy frowned at the spine-cladded staff. "Whatever this is... The origin of this change is negative..." April tilted her head. "Why do you say that, Sir?"

Sighing heavily, Rnoy turned directly to her. "Because when I used the staff in the wilderness to slay the blight of undead... The staff changed... it became less of a negative energy, and more of a neutral... as if the task in and of itself altered the appearance." He turned back to the weapon. "And now it's once more like this... The original state in which I obtained it after the defeat of Kruluk."

"But, Sir... we were just standing here... it obviously wasn't our doing." "No, it very much was not our doing." His voice trailed as another hiss, and almost a groan grumbled from the staff, and then.. silence.

They stared at the piece for several moments, waiting for something, anything, of a response, but nothing came. Sighing once more, Rnoy moved back to his seat, April following.

"Maybe Kruluk still lives and is making an effort to regain his staff?" Now that was a bold statement coming from his student, but the thought had crossed his mind already. "I suppose it is very possible... but if that were the case, a weapon of such power would more than likely be attuned to it's maker... he'd know exactly where to find it." April would nod, "I suppose... but.." Her gaze drifted back to the staff, "Then what.. or who.. could do that..?"

Rnoy's gaze followed hers, "I don't know.. I just don't know.."

As the room shook lightly a small piece of rock falls from the cieling, landing on mimring's forehead, waking him up. the cave was pitch black with the notable exception of the occasional glowing fungus. Sitting up with a painful groan he clutches his side in pain as he checks his limbs, the left arm clearly missing. Standing up carefully, unsure of the height of the cave, mimring start to pat his pouch finding his runes broken and after a quick examination only a sword and a dagger are left in relatively usable state.

"at least I still have one arm, hope they won't jump to conclusions when finding the other one" Speaking to himself to break the silence Mimring started to move around the cave finding a tunnel through which a faint gust of air passed. Slipping inside he started to move through the desert's belly not sure of where he is nor where he is going.

Captains log: TAL001 (The Adventurer's Lust)

“Prepare to set off!”
a loud voice came from the back of the ship. The voice came from a small fairy sitting on the shoulder of a large gray werewolf. She was dressed in earthy tones but nothing fancy and her hair was pulled back in a tight golden braid that lay between her two mossy colored wings.

She took to the air with a dainty jump from the wolf’s shoulder.
“Gustav, I need you to check on Stubbz and Lepp and ensure they are not slacking off again”
The wolf nodded and said,
“At once Captain Moonlily.”
He gave a quick bow and made his way off to do his duties.

Morlana flew lightly to the overlooking balcony and sat on it while she watched her crew as they prepared to sail out. Down below, Xanthus was checking all the ropes and testing each of the corresponding connections to ensure everything was stable and ready for the trip. Closer to the bow, Nixar was shouting other orders at the crew and telling them of the great riches they would find for the glory of the Demonlord.

Gustav returned as Morlana was watching.
“All is in order my lady. The ghouls are ready at their posts.”
He explained to the captain. She nodded at her first mate and stood on the railing.
“All hands to your positions! It’s time to sail to adventure and glory! For the Demonlord! For Mortainia! Raise the anchor!”
She shouted with gusto to the waiting crew. The crew cheer loudly and the anchor was raised. The ship was finally setting sail to new lands leaving Port Phasmatys behind.
