AFK'ing Clanmates

Being in charge of my clan I have to contact clanmates quite often, I'm sure most everyone here can say the same. However it's proven to be a regular thing; every day while trying to communicate with one clanmate or another, at least one member doesn't reply back even after several minutes. Here is an example-

Me in Clanchat:
Hey, 'Clanmates name'. I need to speak to you about somehting important.
*Pm's person the same message*

*2 minutes later*

Me in Clanchat:
Hey, 'Clanmates name', U der? o_0
*5 minutes later*

Pm to clanmate:
...?
Me in Clanchat:
You there, 'Clanmates name'?

They will either log out eventually or finally respond.

This will happen every day. It's caused me to very much dislike afkers with a passion. Not because they're afk, but because they don't check messages. (imho) It's not even effort to scroll up in clanchat to see if someone has been trying to speak with you, if you can't do that when you're afking, then you shouldn't be playing. Might as well be a bot :|

To be clear, I'm not assuming bots here. Just bad at responding. They may just not read chat *cringes*, or are in afk combat and don't bother to read chat etc. My question is how do other clan leaders deal with such situations.

Please discuss :)

There's nothing wrong with it, i play other games while i fish and can miss a lot txt if im heavily engaged in the other game, someone telling me i shouldnt be doing that is quite laughable and i think ill just ignore the bot comment.

If people want to do that i see no problem and i personally dont see why anyone else should in general terms but if its not something you like from a clanmate then make it a rule in your clan and kick them out.

How difficult is it to scroll up and see if someone has said your name though? Or to check if you have any private messages?
That's the main thing I don't get. I'm afking dark beasts as I type this, and it's easy enough to just take a glance at chat.

...Or maybe it's not?

I'm probably the coldest and most indifferent of my clan's administration (shocker right? :p ) so my method might not be ideal but I have two methods of going about it.

If they don't respond and are in the lobby, I will send them the message and tell them to get back to me. If it's time sensitive, then I will just assume it was sent. If it's something that can wait, I will send another message the next day asking if he got it.

If they're in game, I will send a message and check back in 5 minutes. After that 5 min, if they're still logged in, whether in game or in lobby, I will send it again and decide they received it and act accordingly. If he logged out, I'll try again next time.

For me, if people can't be asked to check their messages, that's not my problem. There are plenty of ways to let people know you are completely afk (saying it or turning off your online status) so the consequences, if any arise at all from that possibly lost message, is on them.

Though because the above is usually how I handle it, I usually get someone with more tact to pass messages along for me lol...

I just catch them when they are free, RS is kind of an afk game for most.

I agree with Tok3d about Runescape being mostly Afk based to many people. I can relate to it by watching films while training the majority of skills even combat related ones. Also, some people in clans tend not to speak but just listen i realised that when leading that a select few would never speak but join clans just for reading other peoples conversation.

I do feel though if a leader messages you that a clan member should reply our of respect though especially if you mention the word 'important'.

Speaking personally

I am normally working while afking rs, doing stuff irl while afking rs or doing Uni work while afking rs.

In fact ill give you an example which happened yesterday....

Someone pm'd me and I didn't realise because it was moved to do people logging in and out on my friends list, the person then messaged me again and said "so I take that as a no?" and I was like "what are you talking about?" so I scrolled up and checked.

The problem with the lobby is pms in the lobby don't stay very long which is really frustrating.

My clan members know if i'm not talking in cc i'm afk and its best to leave me a message on Facebook/Twitter/Skype/Text as it will stay there and I will respond to it when I see it and have a spare minute. This works the other way around if I need to contact them as well.

This reminds me of that message box/offline messaging players asked for years ago would be a nice addition and would solve the issue. A player logs in and a message pops up "you have 2 unread messages" - Although this should be separate from the player inbox in game already so people can't do Pmod scams and such.

I'm with you on the hate AFKers sofa ( pun intended). And think its sad that the game has become so playable afk. For me it ruins the spirit of play ( and of social clans in particular) . But I don't hold it against people if thats how they want to play.

Having said that, I do expect ( especially higher) ranks in clan to pay at least some attention. I expect ranks to watch over the clan chat and make sure rules are adhered to, and to act accordingly if they are not. As we have mandatory capping, I expect that they see the clan boardcast messages and respond to them at least some of the time - preferably more. It is something that niggles at me, and may fester into something I will have to address, and where necessary de-rank those who afk all the time, and pay little or no attention to the clan chat.

I have to agree with a lot that has been said, the game is so afk, I often wonder why people play a game that takes no concentration or effort. But I guess thats just me.

Our guidelines for staff is if you are afk the leave then CC at least, this is so we know what staff are available if needed.

We have a lot of afk members, that never interact with the CC ever, makes me wonder why they are in the clan at times. But I guess its for the avatar bonus? Doesnt concern me really,
