It probably never went away but it is a long time since they have targeted my Clan . And I have the same question I had last time - WHY 24 hours after reporting an incident is the individual still active and gathering new victims ??????

Day one of security week and I start to get ' those' pms - " We see that you are a good player and helpful to others" etc etc - string them along to get enough to report and 2 lines later I get that familiar " would you like to be a Pmod"

I HATE these guys with a passion, they play on a weakness many have, the need to be recognized and acknowledged ! Last time they hit the Clan they nearly got a scalp - a 70+ member who had lost her husband 3 days before - fortunately we got to her in time. Then it took a week after reporting the name before the individual disappeared.

Have warned the Clan - now I am warning you all that this scam is active again. But so much for security week - why does it take customer service 24 + hours to remove the threat ? (I reported 3 times as impersonating staff, scamming and soliciting information - sign in 2 minutes ago and there they are logged in again)

Ugh that's awful in so many ways :(

This is a scam that can't be eradicated by Jagex.
So yes it never went away, I've had a couple lately.
Unless they filter words such as pmod, player mod, player moderator etc, they just make new accounts & try to get people's details which seems to me impossible to prevent without severely limiting account making, which can't as a business be Jagex's aim.

I find these attempts laughable anyway, but it is sad to hear someone vulnerable was targeted.

They probably gather more information and IP's so they can get rid of the whole chain instead of an individual account. Since it takes a couple of minutes to set up a new account and people can use bots for it, there's no point in directly banning them. It's also not that difficult to gather data on the amount of victims so they've likely optimized their methods to protect players the most. It might seem contradictory to let those scammers ingame for longer periods of time as they could make more victims, but overall there will be less victims than if they'd tried to ban the individual accounts instantly. That's what I think though, as Jagex is unlikely to disclose their methods.

Education is indeed the best policy and we play our part. It is one of the things that make me proud to be a part of the Clan system. The way everyone can rally around and look out for each other and if the worst happens then rebuild with / for the individual. Over the years we have picked up so many off the ground and set them back on their feet - emotionally much more than materially .

But I just wish Jagex would play their part too. It is all very well to say they are gathering information etc etc . We have heard that line over the years again and again. What actually happens in game is many no longer report - word out there is that it is 100% waste of time because nothing will happen. Outside our own safe little social bubbles there is a very toxic element out there in game that not only have been allowed to survive, they have been given the green light to thrive.

I understand what you're saying Tigergal44.

Regarding people who don't report because they view it as a waste of time, that is shame on them.

If they aren't doing their part, they have no place criticising Jagex.

Whenever these types of issues are brought up by anyone in clan chat I add a reminder that it's important to make sure you report these people every time.
Occasionally I've found members that don't even know how to report, so it's a good opportunity to teach.

You really can't have an unrealistic expectation for Jagex to deal with impersonators that quickly, there will always be these kind of problems lingering for any game

This particular scam is a waste of time to report, theres nothing that can be done about it because for every one that is banned another pops up instantly. I mean there isnt much more that can be learned from how its done or whos doing it. so i can understand the lack of urgency to ban these accounts because it essentially makes no difference to keep banning them its something that needs to be addressed in a different way. The easiest way is to educate people.
