My clan has been close to having 500 members total a few years ago, but we cleared inactive/deactivated accounts. So the count never got quite to the maximum. Recently, I just let it ride and am about to do another "Spring Cleaning", but actually it's great to see the count at 500 finally.
Anyhow, I'm curious, what does one do, when you reach the cap and more people would like to join? And you don't have or want to get rid of anybody? Many I know started a "2nd" clan. But when you do that, you're missing alot of conversations that happen and quite alot else.
Not sure how I'd handle that myself, so I'm thinking ahead and getting input on how others dealt with such scenarios.
Clan:
A couple years ago, we reached 500 members and (long story short) the previous leader of my clan did not want us to drop below this number. So, we created a list of inactive members sorted by length of inactivity. If we had anyone wanting to join, we would kick someone from the top of the list for space.
This caused a lot of problems for us, and now that leadership has been passed on to me, I'm making sure that we keep up on regular activity checks to clear out members who have been gone for a significant period of time.
I personally feel that 500 members is excessive to maintain and keep track of when a portion of them has not been active, but everyone can choose to manage their clans differently.

We generally kick inactive members. I'd prefer not to kick players, but if it comes down to it, i'd rather have people dedicated to the game and the clan, than people that decided to quit RS for half a year lol. We kick players that are 3+ months inactive, UNLESS they let us know ahead of time they will be away for an extended period of time, in which case, I change their clan job to On Vacation, so they're not kicked.
Our activity rule stands that we only remove you if you've been inactive for so long that your username leaves your account. However anyone who reached over the rank of Admin is excepted from this.

We've got a pretty low requirement of gaining 100K experience in your first month of joining and 1M experience a year to remain in the clan. These requirements work for now and if not we'll probably increase them a bit. Just start with the minimum requirement that fits your clan and go from there.

Really depends on what you want and what your clan's purpose is. Personally I'd stop recruiting if the clan became too big as I care mostly about the friendships. I don't know how you do it, but if I were in a clan and had to remember 499 other players I'd get a headache.
