Best strategy for…. Left over artefacts?

The archeaology skill is designed so that you will get more damaged artifacts than the materials you need to repair those artifacts. It is designed to make you either go to material caches to collect the extra materials (costs time), or buy materials from other players (costs gp's). E.G at venator remains, the artefacts need 12+16 materials, and you tend to get 4+4 materials for every artifact - far fewer than you need!

1.
Most artifact collections II, III and IV have worthwhile reward such as Batteries, Chronotes or Tetras. Store them in your bank if there is a chance you get others in that collection (through excavation, from research, or from tetra compasses).Future Yak tracks may need you to repair artifacts so your bank collection may actually still come in useful to get that task done even at 99/120/200m.

2
.
Disassemble for ancient invention components. Note that that works with materials and soil as well! You can use these in ancient gizmos or make component crates and sell on the GE.

3.
You may not care for the achievement now, but maybe later you will! You can hand them in to the museum cart and get a miserly amount of chronotes, and make progress towards "the donator V". By the time you reach 250 donated artefacts, you will have picked up 105 runescore.

4.
Destroy. This strategy would allow you to AFK excavation, and repair as much as you can with the materials you receive

Best Strategy for ….Archeaology training

Best can mean different things for different people. In practice you will probably follow one or more of these strategies at different times:-

Excavating faster gives more xp per hour, so make sure you buy all the precision upgrades. Use the archaeology boosts from the shop and compasses when excavating high level spots, and unlock the cosmic accumulator from the Desperate Measures quest, and the Pontifex Observation ring from the Azzanadra quest.

1
Quickest xp: buy everything – materials for repairs, chronotes for research and best possible mattocks (and perks). You will still need to excavate the highest possible spots for artefacts. Don't underestimate how much this will cost!
2
Balanced / Iron: only excavate for best collections you can do (and re-do), and do caches to get missing mats. Buy research from the chronotes you will get.
3
Completion: Do all special research, mysteries and new collections as you unlock them. Many of them actually help you along the way.
4
Best gp’s: Only excavate and sell all mats. This is slow xp…

The best strategy for leveling tends to be a focus on collections.
Collections --> Chronotes --> Research --> XP from artefacts and materials

Collections --> Chronotes --> Cash for mats --> XP from artefacts

If there are no new collections, re-do the highest collections or those that give you useful rewards. Most players end up working on these collections if there is nothing new to do:-

Kharid-Et Zaros collections
for batteries (highest collections possible)
Warforge Bandos collections
for tetras (red-rum I and II probably best. Tomes from tetras can make up for the lower xp or time spent on tetras)

Best strategy for … Making $$$money$$$ from archaeology

General tips for benefitting from your archaeology training:-

Wear LOTD and GOTE for seren spirits
Wear BOTG for blessings for comps
Some mattock perks can give you indirect gp benefits such as clues scrolls

Primary money making methods:-
1.
Complete collections for chronotes. This is profitable if you collect your own mats, or ignore the left-over artifacts you cannot repair.
2.
Excavate materials and sell. Watch the market for the most desitable materials. They tend to be the ones for Kharid-et and Warforge collections, or those required for tetras.
3.
Sift soil – once you reach level 111 you will get 1 material for each soil.

The following are low profit rate activities:-
4.
Collecting recipe fragments in Oseous
5.
Making ancient invention material crates –Low level artefacts like Venator remains are great for that.
6.
Completing tetra compasses.
7.
Completing research
8.
Making blueprints from fragments in Stormguard.
9.
Filling xp capacitors. This can be moderately profitable providing you don’t need the mattock xp for levelling or invention yourself.

E.g. one hour at Venator remains

Follow the sprite, cosmic accumulator, with full 120 Archeaology outfit, and using a yak to maximise time at the excavation site, and bank nearby. From several trials:

120-140 artifacts depending on your concentration on the sprite
370-390 materials
Soil (not tracked)
120 to 140 classic components (1 small crate)
1840-2100 historic components (approx 2 large crates)
You will need to check material and crate prices to calculate profits, but it tends to be >5m gp/hour.

Tip: The soma relic can add additional profits to the above as it provides 20% increase to Archaeology excavation precision (at the expense of receiving no soil).

E.g. Profitable sifting soil
Profits change a lot with market prices but can also exceed 5m/hour for Earthen Clay (Warforge) and Ancient Gravel (Kharid-et). Check astral and soil costs, Test on a small batch of soil first and price check your inventory to work out the average material cost and hence your profit per hour.

with 5600 sift per hour, profits will be:-
[profit] = 5600 x [ (average material cost) - (Astral rune cost) - (soil cost) ]

Best strategy for…Mattock perks?

If you finally managed to get that augmentable mattock, it turns out there are only a few choices for selecting perks that actually help you. Dragon (lvl60), Crystal (lvl70), Imcando (Lvl80) and Mattock of Space and Time (Lvl99), and should you be so lucky Tony's mattock (Lvl99) can all be augmented.
Remember that Lady Ithell can help upgrade your augmented Mattock carrying across your augmentation and perks, so you won’t need to remove those. The useful perks are:-
1.
Imp Souled
for a probability moving soil, materials and artifacts to your bank using prayer points. You can use an ancient elven ritual artifact or pray pots to generate your prayer point whilst excavating.
2.
Honed
, to improve the success rate of material excavation
3.
Prosper
, to get a chance of receiving clue scrolls
4.
Fortune
, to have a small chance to double soil, materials and artefacts to go to your bank
5.
Furnace
, to burn materials for xp - for best xp/hr
6.
Refined
, to help material caches from depleting.
7.
Enlightened
, to level your mattock faster for invention XP.
8.
Wise
for an extra 50k xp per day

There are a few useful combinations of these which can be used. For instance you can create the following combinations in rough order of popularity:-

Imp Souled
and
Honed
: I6/H6 although I6/H5 and I5/H6 or I5/H5 are also perfectly usable.

Fortune
and
Imp Souled
: e.g. F3/I2 or F2/I3-5

Fortune
and
Prosper
: e.g. F3/P

Honed
and
Prosper
: e.g. H5-6/P

Honed
and
Fortune
: e.g. H4-6/F1

Refined
can also be combined with
Prosper
or
Fortune

It is best to explore the perks calculator on the Runescape Wiki to work out the best way to create these. Wear your invention master cape if you can, and note that in some cases invention potions, or artificially reducing your invention level (by standing outside Godwars 1 snowy area) can help improve the probability of the desired perk combination.

Note
Furnace may look attractive, but ultimately you may need those mats that you are burning. You may end up spending more time excavating rather than repairing where most of your xp is gained. Furnace is maybe only useful if you are prepared to buy your materials in that case.

Best strategy for...XP

Unlocking guild shop rewards should be your first priority as it makes xp faster as you level up.

Excavating the higher possible spot you have access to should give you the best general gathering xp. Don't neglect collections as repairs in the end dominate xp gain. Most players do Bandos or Zaros collections for the added from batteries or tetras.

1.
You can buy archaeology tea from the guild shop for an xp boost.
2.
Use the wise perk on your mattock for an extra 50k xp
3.
Fix your daily task to be archaeology (if you have sufficient level 99's), so that you can double it with vis wax on a daily basis.
4.
Use the furnace perk
5.
An active pylon or Rex (Osseous roar) will give you XP and mattock precision boost which gives enhanced xp during that time

Tip: The Soma relic can add additional artefacts to the above as it provides 20% increase to Archaeology excavation precision (at the expense of receiving no soil).

Strategy for DXP live

DXP gives you
double XP
for sifting and excavation, but not for artefact repairs.

DXP also affects "precision" which is doubled. That means you get artefacts at double speed, but materials are unaffected as DXP does not boost "focus". So if you collect your own artefacts and materials, will be be less then double rates during dxp.

Given this, DXP is a good time to collect artefacts, and it is best to make up on materials when DXP is paused or over.

This situation also makes material prices rise, as an obvious way to make up for the missing materials is to buy them.

If you are more motivated by GPs than XP, DXP is a good time to stock up on venator remains artefacts. Just buy the materials far in advance or well after dxp so you dont have to pay over the odds for the materials
