Just about every star I go to, and admittedly it's not many, I hear Bronze vs ___ chat. Which one is faster? My own switching, said bronze seems faster.

Today I tested it. World 49 Lletya had a S-5 star following the reset wave. I have a Crystal Pickaxe on my toolbelt, so I tested Bronze (by wielding it) to Crystal (by unequipping the bronze). My default outfit was: Max Cape; Magic Golem: Head, Gloves, Legs, & Boots; Varrock 4 armor (Body). Aura was Resourceful. 99 Mining.

Since I have 200m xp mining, I can't use xp gains for the test, so I used Stardust. I just kept dropping/destroying it, so I could collect more and continue the test. All timing was done with a wristwatch with stopwatch function. All times were truncated to Min:Seconds (decimal seconds from .01 to .99 would be thrown away - rounding not done).

Mining has much variance to it, so multiple tests were done, with varying amount of stardust for the tests (if possible, given the stardust remaining in that level). The dust count was the duration of each half of the test. Times are posted under the pickaxe used.

Size 5.....Bronze...Crystal
25 dust....1:06.........1:01
25 dust....0:56.........1:23
25 dust....1:06.........1:26

Size 4
100 dust...2:30.........3:54

(meaning it took 2:30 to mine 100 dust using Bronze. Then 3:54 to get 100 more dust using the Crystal) M:SS

Size 3
100 dust...2:38.........3:31
100 dust...2:31.........3:54

Removed all worn items and stopped Resourceful Aura

Size 2
200 dust...4:19.........6:15
150 dust...3:00.........4:32

Size 1
200 dust...2:18.........3:21
200 dust...2:18.........3:22
200 dust...2:18.........3:19

Bronze was quicker to give the test amount of dust in 10 out of 11 tests.


Will it be quicker for you, my guess is yes. If you find a lonely star, you can do your own testing at your level and default pickaxe.

I've been a member for a long time, and always went with the assumption, that each better pick was 10% better than the previous one. Years ago, I tested that theory on Addy and Rune ores, and it seemed to hold.

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Mith, Addy, Rune, Dragon, Crystal.

So based on my previous knowledge, I would have expected Crystal to blow away a Bronze pickaxe in the timed testing.

Many people laugh when they see my bronze pick, and my mining level/xp. The testing times weren't fudged.

I think that pickaxes have no mining speed effect on stars. And so that the speed is RNG based. Ceecs - leader of Ceecs Clan
