I think using this space to vent about an update I think hurts or shower more praise, then listen to any and all feedback on my opinions or the content I bring up could be a fun, therapeutic, learning experience for me. Here's Hilda's favorite and least favorite updates from the year Taylor Swift started dating an (American) football player.

WORST: Removal of the Wilderness Threat System.

I bet you guys were thinking "oh, Hero Pass, has to be." - and I'll admit, that is some pretty low hanging fruit. Most people would probably pick that one. But even Jagex realized that one flew like a lead balloon, and this update is more important to the game's identity in my opinion.

It's also probably highly controversial. At least one of you accused me of being someone that tries to PK runecrafters after reading that reveal. :)

While, yes, the biggest problem I have with this update is that it's the natural conclusion of what was going to happen with one of my least favorite updates of 2022 (which is -
"if you remove mandatory PvP from the Wilderness and people hate the threat system, Jagex is going to cave and just murder the Wilderness' identity by removing any and all threat later on."
- I wanna let it be known that I suck at PvP post-EoC, and don't particularly care for griefing.

This update did more than just "give the people what they wanted" and make the Wilderness tame. It invalidated Wilderness Slayer's risk. It turned several items earned through Wilderness Flash Events that had purposes into mere alchs. It effectively killed "active" thieving training methods with a reactionary nerf to Rogue's Castle safes. It killed the searing ashes rise.

There were two positives. A reactionary change that no longer required skulling up to use the Abyss (a stopgap measure to making rune crafting suck....less.) and removing the threat system from those who had PvP enabled, me and...the three others that did.

I'll save any more thoughts for any feedback you guys throw my way. Let's move on.

BEST: Fort Forinthry.

What's impressive about Fort Forinthry is that I was staunchly against its premise as a "POH-Killer." (I still think they should update the POH, and many others do, in spite of how successful FF is.)

However, this year, the crown goes to ... me. I'm the Duchess. More importantly, Jagex spent roughly an entire year getting me to care about this duchy in Misthalin I came into possession of.

Before we talk about the lavish amenities - we need to point out that the spirit of Bill's old Lumberyard lives on as the plot has inherited a competitive Construction xp rate after later tweaking. This is where a new account wants to get Construction levels, and I wish I didn't have carpal tunnel from the way I had to do it.

Then you have the stage for your campouts at the portable skilling hub world on certain weekends. Rested XP for when you take breaks (or spend too much time here). Your own forest. Fletching stand. Lumbridge Range (completely with cutlery that eviscerates webs in your path!). Guardhouse where you can be a sicko and mount trophy kills of humanoid creatures. Banks....like SO MANY banks. A chapel where you can worship Zamorak as Zamorakians attack you because immersion in video games is worth absolutely nothing. And the architectural equivalent of your gaming set-up with the control centre, managing xp to gp from all over Gielinor in the safety of your own domain.

It would have been disappointing to me if Fort Forinthry -wasn't- my update of the year given its focus. However, Jagex needed to sell me on it - and they used all that time wisely.

I'd love to see a house portal in the Fort (and a Fort Forinthry themed house decor setting to make it feel like my POH was "an extension" of my domain - for actual immersion) - and while I have no doubt Jagex isn't done here - I don't know what else I -could- ask for. Farming patches maybe?

I think in general we do not really have a lot of bigger things to compare to. We've gotten lots and lots of smaller improvements, which just smoothen out certain pieces of content - my favourite for that matter certainly being the improved presets for runecrafting. When it comes to the big things we basically only had the fort and necromancy, which was advertised as both being as impactful as invention as well as rich on content as archaeology. The latter certainly was a lie, but I can fully agree with the former - especially with it now leading to significant improvements to the older combat styles, which just showed off the shortcomings the current combat system still has after so many iterations. But then the hero pass also was advocated as some 'medium sized content update' for over a month up to its release. Speaking of which - it was a significant improvement over the yak track format, it just was handled poorly on so many levels. I just do hope they won't return to the track, but bury it for good.

Which just leaves the fort on the bigger side of updates. To be honest I like the fort for it having fixed construction both on the reward side and the skilling portion (albeit that obviously no longer was as bad as it was for such a long time following the portable workbench and construction contracts). For my taste they're a bit too focused on skilling benefits exclusively, with the kitchen and the botanist station even being extremely niche for that matter. Construction always was supposed to provide a wide range of benefits. Give us something like the portal nexus OS has in its POH and a quick way to access it. Give us a building that provides me benefits for treasure trails in some fashion. Just be more creative. Honourable mention certainly for side effects like the fixes to woodcutting or dragonleather armour - neither would have happened if it wasn't for their involvement in fort content.
Improvements: Tooltip / (F2P) QoL v2
Quick Fixes: Invention

Yeah, there's definitely certain things about Jagex's release cadence nowadays that kind of lend itself to the "buncha small-scale stuff with the couple big updates being batched all year" thing that is able to be facilitated through a serial episodic schedule.

I had to rank "best updates"

1. Fort Forinthry (basically a year-long development journey.)

2. Death Costs Rework (way back in January. I can finally afford to PVM now!)

3. Necromancy (could have been second perhaps, if released earlier in the year)

4. Vorkath (Needs more improvement, but a boss I care a little bit about and liked the narrative execution.)

5. Christmas.

Worst?

1. Wilderness Ninja Strike (Ninjas.... you guys seldom disappoint me. Don't do this again.)

2. Hero Pass

3. Halloween (the holiday event that feels like how we got the Christmas event.)

4. Easter (it's probably a good thing that a re-run of an old event joins another holiday on this list.)

5. The nerf to Animate Dead (which may end up being a positive if my skill improves.)
