gobbstoppers won't work

I'm an Ironman and I spent the last of my H'oddments on 41 'Gourd gorger gobstoppers' and I can't even use them. It says they expire in 3 days, yet when I click on them, it says "The sweet has no effect as the Halloween event has ended." Why let me spend them, if the rewards won't work? Had I known, I would have spent them on cosmetics. Touch my camera through the fence...
