I remember the days when fishing sharks and cutting magics logs were the ultimate money making thing to do on RuneScape! 16m for a Santa hat? no problem, i'll fish 2k sharks or cut 2k magic logs and be social in the fishing guild.

Now, with GP inflation in game, a Santa Hat today costs 1000% more. You can't expect people to fish or cut 1000% more resources.

The reason for this is, in part, is the amount of fish, logs and, whilst we're here, herbs too that come from slayer monsters and PvM drops. Even the Sophanem Slayer Dungeon practically gives away (corrupted)magic logs. This means the fishing, woodcutting and farming (for herbs) is practically worthless as a money maker now. e.g., Nex drops tonnes of magic logs, magic seeds and various herbs, flooding the market.

People may suggest, well, there are Elder logs in game which are 8-10k ea. These are slow to get and still don't yield the GP rewards it's predecessor, the magic log, once did. At least when inflation of GP has been taken into account.

I suggest we limit or cease these resource drops from monster unless absolutely necessary to drive up price of resources up and bring back the money maker that the gathering skills once was! :D Let's make people SKILL again :)

Warm Regards,
Tom

I absolutely agree that at the current rate, we see too many skilling drops from PvM. Yet, with a basic log hovering over 1K each, it would in-turn make you wonder the prices without O_o . The best balance would be to have lower-level players experiencing lower level content, again; therefore helping balance that economy a little nicer.

Mod Mac's idea of this years ago, Prestige , essentially helped provide this -- with some minor adjustments required for feasible execution, of course. Hopefully someday that proposition is revisited, to some extent.

It's extremely funny, that you're calling things like magic tree cutting or shark fishing (just compare that to higher levelled fishing things, that just were released later) as reasonable, yet elder trees as slow to get. I mean there basically is a reason why PvM just was favourable to gain certain resources - also for most ores prior to the M&S rework and herbs before the farming rework a couple of weeks ago.

I am totally open to shift obtaining resources away from PvM - under two conditions. If a resource for which their answer was 'get it via PvM' is unreasonable to obtain via their original skilling method (like trees above acadia, like bird nest, like...) that thing needs to be fixed first by both it's level requirements and cutting rates - you need to be reasonably obtain magic logs with level 50 woodcutting and a rune hatchet for instance - since well - it's nothing, but a material for level 50 weaponry. And even a hypothetical level 90 tree should be faster cutable with an elder rune hatchet, than magic trees right now with everything you could use to boost your rates.

And the second thing is - PvM needs adequate replacements - that isn't alch junk, that drives our overinflation even further. I actually do not even have an issue you can get materials via PvM - it just shouldn't outclass the intended skilling method by such a degree. I think getting seeds instead of herbs wasn't as bad as replacing ores (and especially bars) with stone spirits - but you obviously lose out if you don't grow them yourself. A lot of previously lucrative bosses now feel like an utter waste of time due to this - that really should be kept in mind.

You can see the main problem is the combat drop tables. Like mentioned, you can't just throw GP down for every monster drop. Their drop formula is basically to take anything that has a nice steady price, regardless of where it came from.

So every new drop table, they are just taking out of one hand and putting it in the other. IF you are engaging in the new content. Otherwise, they are just always taking from you to make the new updates seem more popular.

But making skills more profitable is definitely something they are working on. The new wilderness events have included skilling, the herb update, fletching and firemaking, crock oasis, RC boosts, Dream of Iaia, Croesus, incense sticks, stone spirits etc.

Agreed. Skilling would be way more profitable if skilling resources were removed from pvm drops. Keep slayer drops of herbs the same, and remove all other skilling items from all pvm drops.

Why not remove herb drops? They are ruining the farming skill.

In my opinion, everything we can make with our skills should not be available as drops. It only degrades the use of those skills.

PvM could focus on drops that aren't a major skilling product but can be of use to skillers in addition to some combat stuff. Battlestaves and orbs are an example of this since you can only get the staves as drops or purchases and orbs aren't something most players want to spend time making even if they're capable of it. Replace complete staves with their components so players have to make them, like how dragonhide needs to be crafted instead of coming as armour. I think food drops should also be removed to return value to cooking. They could probably make some combat drop herblore secondaries though. The gist is that PvM and skilling should occupy economic niches that don't directly compete with eachother and are mutually beneficial for trading purposes.

Another part of the issue in terms of the value of skilling items is that the proteans and lamps players keep getting mean you barely need to touch player generated items to lvl skills. Why buy logs to fletch or burn when you have proteans that stack in your inventory so you don't have to restock while using skilling stations? Why bother with the tedium of hides and thread when you can use protean hides? We even have protean potions now so no need for all those pesky herblore supplies.
