Could say that the crew who "died" were really traitors and thieves.
Your other crew members and port adventurers determined that they were pirates or were pilfering chimes and resources for you.
So to save court costs and the potential awkwardness of having to explain why you originally hired such a shady person ... they bonked the sea rat on the back of the head, then tossed them overboard.
They just called it "Drowning" for insurance purposes. (They didn't die in combat against another ship, so this is the only other valid report option that wouldn't raise too many suspicions)
