Software mode changes the rendering so that it is all done through the CPU and it disregards any dedicated chip/card. This is why it is slower to use Software mode in comparison to DirectX and OpenGL. However by allocating more memory, you allow you computer to use more of its system resources to execute the game. As RuneScape is much heavier on CPU processing compared to GPU processing, a higher memory allocation allows it to have more freedom. I say this with a caution though, as the more memory you allocate, the more you are taking away from other processes which could cause your system to bottle neck and crash.
