Its not misunderstood, its misused. People try to make stupid arguments about it, like "its designed for muskets, not AR-15s", when clearly that's crap.
In the most literal sense, it actually was designed for muskets. My point is that citing the second amendment in gun control debates is idiotic as it was made in a much different time in response the recent American Revolution. (To allow the citizens of the country to overthrow an unjust government, which wouldn't exactly work out as well nowadays).
Please note I'm not advocating for or against gun control.
And that is the first and last thing I will say about gun control in America on this thread. This is

This is actually something that's really interesting to me. I don't think that it is going to happen in our lifetimes, but its not impossible. If the government tries to ban guns, there will be civil war.
People always say "how could a bunch of rednecks win against the US Military?", but the thing is, that the majority of our military is actually pro-gun and pro-freedom, and would likely join the fight against the government if they tried to take our guns.
There are around 90 guns per 100 people in America, and about half of our population own at least one gun. Thats around 160 million people. Of course, they all wouldn't fight, but even if 10% do, thats still 15 million. Considering that the military is around 2 million, and many of them would fight with the revolution, it is quite possible that the government would be overthrown.
People also say "oh well the government has nukes", but I can almost guarantee that nuclear weapons would not be used. If the US government used nuclear weapons on its own people, very few would continue to support them, in America and abroad.
The American people would definitely have a good chance in a civil war against its government.
Also, the 2nd amendment was not written for muskets. There were plenty of rifles with high capacity and rates of fire at the time, the most commonly used is the Girandoni Air Rifle. To say that it was just for muskets would be to say that our founding fathers saw no possible advancement in weaponry, which is just ridiculous.
I think this is the longest

If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her glory!
